Wow 😄 Well, I'm glad to see you've come to see otherwise. :).Your story reminds me of the account/myth of St Nicholas in the Council of Niece punching Arius simply because he said the Bible doesn't mention the trinity and that Jesus was only the son of God (it is uncertain if it true or not though).

lol! at least, it didn't happen to me.. I said almost...😀....so we have to be careful in the ministry, people can hurt us because they're zealous but not in accurate knowledge. just like paul wrote in romans..

Don’t take chances.  After seeing that poor sister killed last year it’s better to leave or call for help sooner rather than later.

We are trained here to pack up and move at the first sign of trouble. Standing ones ground can get you hurt or worse.  If someone grabbed at me or stared up at me suugestivley I would tell my partner we must move straight away.  We're preaching in the city, you need street smarts here for sure!

We didn't receive that training yet in 2015.. But cart witnessing was already open at that time and we asked permission from the elders though.

And he didn't grab at me yet because we already spotted him .. He kept on passing by but he looked at us differently... We've been there in that place many times but nothing happened so we thought (out of imperfection) that situation would just passed.

That's the sign that I want to take to the RC the next time some guy with a bullhorn is yelling at us...

Oh, so you’ve had that too? It seems to be becoming more commonplace. At one RC my wife and I attended they actually had metal detectors and searched out bags.

Can we use pepper spray?  Just a question when out in the ministry with dogs set on you.  Or on the street not their property.

For dogs I’ve always found that nice tall cowboy boots provide good ankle protection. But I wouldn’t consider pepper spray. That will get you in trouble.

For stray dogs many I know carry treats, pepper spray or umbrellas... But I'm a bit torn on this issue 🤣

If I was at a cart & someone let their dog knowingly come at me or someone sitting with me, while we were on public property, I wouldn't have a problem kicking the animal or trying to defend those around me.

But, if the animal accidentally broke it's leash and became frightened and perhaps bit at me I would try to subdue the animal peacefully.  The same in the public ministry,  I try to put myself in their shoes and if someone came on my property and my dog was simply doing it's job by trying to protect me and someone hurt my animal I would not be happy. (Therefore I would try to be the least violent I could while trying to subdue the animal as I am on it's turf and it views me as an intruder.)

How about pepper spray when you're not in the ministry? for personal use? Is it ok?

I believe that is a personal conscience choice. An old article from the society (which I can't find) once said that it did have its risks however, that it did not always work and that if it was windy you could risk it blowing in your own face. So if a person did, it keep in mind it's not a guarantee to deal with all situations, and you have to be careful with "how" you use it.

Be aware also you don't kill someone's dog (though we may have no choice when our life is at risk).

Quote

Iron-Jawed Dogs
In New York City last year, there were 10,753 reported cases of dog bites, noted the Daily News. On the average, about once a week there was a police-versus-dog confrontation in which firearms were used. Reportedly, some dogs kept coming at the officers even after being riddled with six bullets. Several police officers were bitten, and others “were injured by ricocheting bullets during the battles with iron-jawed pit bulls,” the paper reported. Police Department officials are now concerned about the risk that stray and ricocheting bullets pose to humans when firearms are used on ferocious dogs. When faced with a dangerous dog-related situation, policemen are urged to use nonlethal means, such as a pepper spray, which affects the respiratory system. - Awake! 1994 8/22 watching the world

Carrying a pepper spray or similar device is illegal in the UK.  Although it's purpose is defensive, it could be used offensively and therefore is classed as an offensive weapon.

The are legal alternatives which spray a red gel which causes blurred vision and red staining, and one option has purple staining with uv properties, so even after washing can be used to identify an attacker.

They were asking for volunteers for cart witnessing to go to Nashville for several special events coming up, myself and a pioneer brother didn't apply as neither of us can stand for the 2 hours that were stipulated but now that you mention "having street smarts" you are right, you don't think you may be a victim of crime because you are doing something  nice and good for the community but I also realized how much drinking must be going on with all of the music and bars, they also have peddle bars that people sit on and ride around drinking plus sidewalk scooters everywhere! I guess that's life in the big city, of course daytime is always safer than night.

I can't even make a guess how many times over the years I've been bitten by dogs. Dozens, at least. That was as a mail carrier what seems like a lifetime ago now. We were told to always face the dog keeping our satchel between us and the dog. Handing someone their mail while their dog was present was risky. Got several bites on my hand that way. The only bite that required stitches was from a dog let out by kids as I was walking away. I never saw it coming.

And that is why I always bring my literature bag with me even in the invitation work. But to this day I'm still overly cautious.

Book bag. Not literature bag. I was having a brain freeze.

Guess I got off topic a little, but I think the part about reaching out to the person with literature if their dog is with them could apply to cart witnessing....
