tweezers  : Small pincers, usually of metal that the carpenter    couldn't locate the whole day and he suffered from the irritant (a splinter buried in his finger) Ouch.

 

(This feels like the kind of English exercises we used to do in school) 

 

sweetens   : to make sweet      the bitter concoction made by the Javanese vendor with a bamboo basket, full of herbal drinks on her back.
