NASA's Webb Telescope Unmasks True Nature of the Cosmic Tornadoย

When peering out into space, we get a 2D view of a 3D universe. Sometimes, images will capture objects that appear close to each other on the sky, but are actually at wildly different distances and are unassociated with each other.

ย 

NASAโ€™s James Webb Space Telescope captured this beautiful juxtaposition of the nearby protostellar outflow known as Herbig-Haro 49/50 with a perfectly positioned, more distant spiral galaxy. Due to the close proximity of this Herbig-Haro object to the Earth, this new composite infrared image of the outflow from a young star allows researchers to examine details on small spatial scales like never before. With Webb, we can better understand how the jet activity associated with the formation of young stars can affect their surrounding environment.

What the Webb telescope continues to uncover is awe-inspiring. Sadly, many will attribute the intricacy and beauty found in the vastness of the universe to mere chance, refusing to acknowledge even the possibility of a masterful designer behind what they see. They are skeptical, despite the obvious evidence.

NASA's Webb Sees Galaxy Mysteriously Clearing Fog of Early Universe

Unexpected, bright hydrogen emission caught astronomers by surprise.

The early universe was filled with a thick fog of neutral hydrogen. Even though the first stars and galaxies emitted copious amounts of ultraviolet light, that light struggled to pierce the fog. It took hundreds of millions of years for the neutral hydrogen to become ionized, electrons stripped from protons, allowing light to travel freely through space.

ย 

Astronomers are seeking to understand this unique time of transformation, known as the era of reionization. A newly discovered galaxy illuminated this era in an unexpected way. JADES-GS-z13-1, observed just 330 million years after the big bang, shows bright hydrogen emission that should have been absorbed by the cosmic fog. Theorists are struggling to explain how its light could have pierced the fog at such an early time.

Despite decades of study, the process of star formation still holds many mysteries. At the heart of our Milky Way galaxy is the star-forming region Sagittarius C, which despite a wealth of raw material does not make as many stars as astronomers would expect. Two new studies have used NASAโ€™s James Webb Space Telescope to investigate star formation in this extreme environment that is relatively near the supermassive black hole at the core of the Milky Way, at 200 light-years distance.ย

NASA Webb's Autopsy of Planet Swallowed by Star Yields Surprise

Every year, scientists around the world apply for observing time on NASAโ€™s James Webb Space Telescope. When proposals are selected after a vigorous vetting, the programs go into Webbโ€™s observation queue for the future, ready to be scheduled based on various factors, including windows of visibility.

ย 

However, what if an astronomer wants to study something, but they donโ€™t know ahead of time exactly when that event will take place? Or where? Think supernova explosions or a gamma ray burst. This is called a Target of Opportunity (ToO) observation, which astronomers can define in the proposal planning phase, ready to have them โ€˜enactedโ€™ when the time comes.

ย 

One of the first ToO programs performed by Webb has now proven fruitful, providing insights into the immediate aftermath of when a star swallowed its own planet.

The sky is brighter than astronomers imagined

The most famous Hubble images show glittering stars and galaxies amidst the black backdrop of space. But more was captured than we realized.

NASA's Hubble Tracks a Roaming Magnetar of Unknown Origin

Researchers using NASAโ€™s Hubble Space Telescope have discovered the magnetar called SGR 0501+4516 is traversing our galaxy from an unknown place of origin. Researchers say that this runaway object is the likeliest candidate in our Milky Way galaxy for a magnetar that was not born in a supernova explosion as initially predicted. Only about 30 magnetars have been discovered so far. A magnetar is a neutron star with a magnetic field about a trillion times more powerful than Earthโ€™s magnetosphere. If a magnetar were only half the Moonโ€™s distance, its intense field would wipe out the magnetic strip of every credit card on our planet. If a human got within 600 miles of a magnetar it would rip apart every atom inside the body.

This new image, released on April 4, 2025, showcases the dazzling young star cluster NGC 346. Although both the James Webb Space Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope have released images of NGC 346 previously, this image includes new data and is the first to combine Hubble observations made at infrared, optical, and ultraviolet wavelengths into an intricately detailed view of this vibrant star-forming factory.

Hubbleโ€™s exquisite sensitivity and resolution were instrumental in uncovering the secrets of NGC 346โ€™s star formation. Using two sets of observations taken 11 years apart, researchers traced the motions of NGC 346โ€™s stars, revealing them to be spiraling in toward the center of the cluster. This spiraling motion arises from a stream of gas from outside of the cluster that fuels star formation in the center of the turbulent cloud.

Less than one solar mass of gas is converted into stars within the knotted, dusty disk of the galaxy each year. Hubble Spots a Squid in the Whale

Todayโ€™s rather aquatic-themed NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image features the spiral galaxy Messier 77, also known as the Squid Galaxy, which sits 45 million light-years away in the constellation Cetus (The Whale).
ย 
The designation Messier 77 comes from the galaxyโ€™s place in the famous catalog compiled by the French astronomer Charles Messier. Another French astronomer, Pierre Mรฉchain, discovered the galaxy in 1780. Both Messier and Mรฉchain were comet hunters who cataloged nebulous objects that could be mistaken for comets.
ย 
Messier, Mรฉchain, and other astronomers of their time mistook the Squid Galaxy for either a spiral nebula or a star cluster. This mischaracterization isnโ€™t surprising. More than a century would pass between the discovery of the Squid Galaxy and the realization that the โ€˜spiral nebulaeโ€™ scattered across the sky were not part of our galaxy but were in fact separate galaxies millions of light-years away. The Squid Galaxyโ€™s appearance through a small telescope โ€” an intensely bright center surrounded by a fuzzy cloud โ€” closely resembles one or more stars wreathed in a nebula.

The name โ€˜Squid Galaxyโ€™ is recent, and stems from the extended, filamentary structure that curls around the galaxyโ€™s disk like the tentacles of a squid. The Squid Galaxy is a great example of how advances in technology and scientific understanding can completely change our perception of an astronomical object โ€” and even what we call it!

Hubble previously released an image of M77 in 2013. This new image incorporates recent observations made with different filters and updated image processing techniques which allow astronomers to see the galaxy in more detail.

Hubble Spies Cosmic Pillar in Eagle Nebula

New images of NGC 346 and the Sombrero Galaxy have already been published. Now, ESA/Hubble is revisiting the Eagle Nebula (originally published in 2005 as part of Hubble's 15th anniversary celebrations) with new image processing techniques...

This newly reprocessed image released on April 18, 2025, provides a new view of an enormous, 9.5-light-year-tall pillar of cold gas and dust. Despite its size, itโ€™s just one small piece of the greater Eagle Nebula, also called Messier 16.

ย 

The Eagle Nebula is one of many nebulae in the Milky Way that are known for their sculpted, dusty clouds. Nebulae take on these fantastic shapes when exposed to powerful radiation and winds from infant stars. Regions with denser gas are more able to withstand the onslaught of radiation and stellar winds from young stars, and these dense areas remain as dusty sculptures like the starry pillar shown here.

Rosette Nebula

The Rosette Nebula is a vast star-forming region, 100 light-years across, that lies at one end of a giant molecular cloud in the constellation Monoceros. The nebula is estimated to contain around 10,000 solar masses. The nebula is located about 5,000 light-years away from Earth. Intense radiation from the young stars inside a cluster in the nebula causes the gasses to glow. The background image is from the Digitized Sky Survey, while the inset is a small portion of the nebula as photographed by the Hubble Space Telescope. Dark clouds of hydrogen gas laced with dust are silhouetted across the image. The colors come from the presence of hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen.
