What's happening in France?

Major nationwide protests are underway across France today, with tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of people demonstrating over the cost of living, underfunded schools, and related grievances.

These protests build on weeks of high-school student actions over teacher shortages, dilapidated buildings, overcrowded classes, and police responses. They have broadened into a “convergence of struggles,” drawing in Yellow Vest (Gilets Jaunes) activists, trade unions (such as the CGT), teachers, university students, and others concerned about inflation and public services.

Key developments

•  Turnout estimates: Authorities reported around 140 actions involving ~33,000 people outside Paris by midday. Union figures later put national participation at 550,000–800,000. Paris saw a large march, with estimates of tens of thousands.

•  Clashes and violence: Significant unrest in several cities. In Paris, police used tear gas, water cannon, and stun grenades against masked/hooded groups throwing projectiles and fireworks, especially around Place de la République. A tourism office was set on fire in Lyon. In Marseille, protesters entered the town hall, caused damage, and there were reports of looting and attacks on a police station. Similar incidents (vandalism, fires, looting of shops) occurred in places like Bordeaux, Lille, Rennes, Toulouse, and Angers.

•  Official responses: President Emmanuel Macron had called for calm and respect for people/property while affirming the right to protest. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu condemned the “violence of extreme intensity” and said the government would not be intimidated. The Interior Ministry highlighted rapid security responses.

This comes amid broader context: Macron is in the final stretch of his term (presidential elections expected in 2027), with high unpopularity, political fragmentation, inflation concerns (recent figures around 3.4%), and debates over public finances/EU budget. Opposition figures (including from the far-right National Rally and far-left) have commented on the unrest.

Other recent notes include ongoing political positioning ahead of the 2027 vote and routine economic updates, but the protests dominate the day’s news. Situation remains fluid with live coverage from major outlets.

They are being French. I’m part Canadian French, I should know it.

Do you like to protest too, brother Glen?

Hopefully she is a sister as calm and collected as she appears. Able to go forward while the world around her crumbles. Heartbreaking the whole tragic scene

Remember the old commercials that said "Is it live or is it Memorex?" It's harder to tell now than it was then. 🤣

Likely AI-generated content, dear @Dhanyel

That is a possibility, especially if the source is social media and not a leg news outlet.

143 year old Limoges Town Hall burns in one night

The article continues:

Students in France are demonstrating to demand greater higher-education funds and resources, amid the climbing costs of living, deteriorating school conditions and declining public services, according to NPR's Eleanor Beardsley, who was on the ground in Paris.

About 550,000 people marched around the country on Saturday, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez told Reuters. While most of them protested peacefully, a small minority looted shops and attacked buildings, including the Limoges City Hall.

The movement has since spread across Europe — from Belgium and Albania to Portugal and Italy — with some protests turning into violent clashes between students and law enforcement.

What do you mean by Typical? Is it normal in France to have protest during this season?

A massive social mobilization against the high cost of living has flared up this autumn, a season traditionally prone to protests as it aligns with the political return and annual budget debates.

This time is different due to an unprecedented "convergence of struggles" uniting students, unions, and former Yellow Vests. Falling just six months before the presidential election, this movement reflects deep government rejection, culminating in a major political crisis fueled by violent urban riots.

However, it was widely shared on social media.

So?

Many AI videos are widely shared on social media.

There are websites one can send the video to that would verify if it's AI.  Of course AI uses these websites to improve their output.

In this day and age a video being widely shared on social media might very well prove it's fake.

Let's reason on this.  You ever drive by a car crash, protest, building fire, or something out of the ordinary? What did you do? What did everyone around you do? Didn't they slow down to watch? Even if they drove by they still looked, didn't they?

In this video the woman pays literally no attention to the riot behind her. It doesn't attract her attention. The noise of the protest are not enough to disrupt her tea time. The fumes and smoke from the protest don't bother her. It's as if she's completely unaware what is going on behind her. Is she deaf, blind, and lacking in sense of smell in addition to curiosity and morality?

Who filmed the woman and why? The person filming the woman also was more focused on the woman than the much more interesting event going on in the background. And the camera is so still.  Can you hold a camera that still for that long without the slightest shift or twitch? The scene seems staged, doesn't it? Planned. As if they knew the riot would unfold in the background.

RT is Russia Today, the state run propaganda agency of Russia. What is RT's record of fact based journalism?

The simplest answer is usually the correct answer. What makes the most sense - this woman lacks the curiosity that is common among all humans or the video is fake and created as a form of sarcastic commentary?

😂

With all these questions, you’ve turned a woman drinking coffee into a whole Netflix crime documentary. Hahaha 😂☕
