Hurricane Helené - Update for those who were asking

Recommended Posts

My sister in Charlotte just shared this with me:

Evening friends,

Here is an update. Thanks to the generosity of many in our circuit, including our congregation currently, the 53-foot tractor trailer is 70% full. All of this came together in less than 24 hrs! Thank you all for your willing spirit to help our brothers and sisters in Western North Carolina. Please continue to pray for them.

Our congregation has a truck getting filled tomorrow and heading out at 2:30. This is for several congregations to bring stuff in our area.
Refrigerated items, batteries, candles etc.

Im sure this is the first of more to come.

Our KH is also hosting a special SMPW campaign.

This is a very fast paced and busy October!!!

Jer 29:11-“For I well know the thoughts I am thinking toward you, declares Jehovah, thoughts of peace, and not calamity, to give you a future and a hope.”

Psalm 56:3-“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”
Romans 8:38-”For I am convinced...”

A couple of our elders took the gas to the KH in Swannanoa.
They have already removed carpets, cleaned as best they can, set up generators and have a supply of food, water and now gas. Sisters are organizing supplies and brothers doing security.
It’s possible some laundry will be brought back for us to help with by another sister and her husband headed there for disaster relief. I think they went yesterday too.

Is the the kingdom hall on JW.Org? Do you know the Wood family?  Bonnie, Jordan, Jason, John, Jessie?

How many gallons of water fell on these areas hit by Helene?  Answer 40 trillion gallons.  The mountains became funnels for the water, rushing down to the streams and rivers. The winds sustained in some areas 140 miles an hour up to 160 miles.  The friends and the people who lived in the Hollers, had no chance to prepare.  They had no idea.  That 40 trillion gallons of water wiped out everything in its path.  The week before Helene came barreling up, the friends and surrounding counties and in Tennessee, had had rain the whole week.  The ground was saturated.  When Helene, came by, the hurricane stalled over top North Carolina and East Tennessee. She stalled because it involved atmospheric pressure conditions.   Imagine getting 30 inches of water, that estimates to 40 trillion gallons of rain!  40 trillion gallons of rain is enough to cover the entire state of N.C. with 3.5 FEET of water.  40 trillion of water is enough to fill 60 millions Olympic-swimming pools.  Those mountains acted like funnels or rain catchment, the mountains directed all the water downhill. Thus filling up the valleys below.  It is sheer devastation down in North Carolina, and Tennessee.  It's never happened before.

Why is it funny?  I know these named friends.  I am concerned for their well being.

Sorry, I didn't intend to minimize your concern. I am deeply sorry.

We know a family whose last name starts with W and all of the kid's names start with a J. Each child has the same initials, JW. So, I happened to notice that your friends had the same initials.

...I only hope the next hurricane does not come too soon and does not hit the same area...

I just heard there is another hurricane brewing. It's expected in 3 days...🌀

I hope Hurricane Milton turns away soon!

That's the last thing you need!

Thinking/praying for you all.

Currently Hurricane Milton is another Category 4 storm.

Actually, it became a 5 today, but is supposed to make landfall as a 3..So far landfall at Tampa and exits as a 1 just south of where we live! All of central Florida can get large amounts of rain and high winds!

I hear there’s a bit of a breeze heading your way! While some folks might call it a “hurricane,” I prefer to think of it as Florida’s annual uninvited guest—one that shows up unannounced, makes a mess, and overstays its welcome. If I know you, you’ve got your supplies ready, shutters closed, and a hurricane survival kit that includes more snacks than essentials (because priorities, right?).

Just remember, if things get wild, you can always ride it out with a beach chair in the living room, sunglasses on, pretending it’s just another tropical day. But seriously, stay safe, and if you need anything—besides a boat—Jehovah's on your side, and so are the rest of us.

Through it all, remember that Jehovah is your stronghold (Psalm 46:1), and you’re never facing this storm alone. Our global brotherhood is standing by you in prayer, and we’re confident that Jehovah’s protection will see you through. Lean on Him, and know that your brothers and sisters are thinking of you and ready to support you in any way we can.

Having seen the update on jw.org and the news reports, my heart truly goes out to those affected by Helene and their families. It's heartbreaking to see not only the loss of life but also the injuries, property damage, and displacement caused. Though I live in Central Florida, I am currently traveling and will be back in just over a week. I hope to offer any help I can to those in need when I return. My thoughts and prayers are with all the brothers and sisters in the path of Hurricane Milton - please stay safe and be prepared.

We are OK. No damage that I know of. We only lost power for about 5 minutes, and it came back on - that was about 2 AM. It is really wet here.

Our friends from Treasure Island evaccuated to Alachua and are with brothers there. They will return to Treasure Island when allowed to and see the condition of the apartment.

Our friends will return to Treasure Island tomorrow..According to them, there was no storm surge like anticipated because the hurricane made landfalll south of Tampa!
