TikTok Plans Immediate US Shutdown on Sunday

Recommended Posts

I am not a person who uses TikTok. I downloaded it once and decided it's not for me. That being said, I had heard news of this app being banned. Looks like that will happen this Sunday, January 19. 2025. Is there anyone here that uses this app that will be affected? Here are some key takeaways from the story and I will include the link to the story too.

TikTok plans to shut down its app for American users on Sunday, Jan. 19, in response to a law banning the app in the United States.

The law, signed by President Biden last April, bans new downloads of TikTok and makes it "unlawful" to update the app, prompting TikTok to take the step of immediate shutdown. U.S. lawmakers' chief concern with TikTok is its potential to be used as spyware for the Chinese communist government, as the app is required by Chinese law to share user data if requested.-https://www.yahoo.com/news/tiktok-plans-immediate-us-shutdown-153524617.html

I astutely avoided tic-toc. Facebook is bad enough, but I’m in touch with so many ones i care about, via FB. Plus, get this. We have no newspaper. So, local news, obituaries, and whatnot…

I missed a funeral of a person both Sid and I care about. Today. I went out in service, he picked up the mail, and our weekly tribal dinner and lunch.
(Prepared by an actual chef!) Anyway, he found out the funeral and meal after the service was today.
He went, and did sign my name. I did get a couple of sympathy cards i will send tomorrow.
What happened was they, “put it on social media”, and it did not show upon my FB.
So, social media, I appreciate, to the extent I use it.
But, no Tic Toc.  It’s limited me somewhat, (because a lot of people apparently do use it) but, oh well.

I want to age without sharp corners, and have an obedient heart!

I am a tiktok user but have certain precautions in place. Its like anything else (Netflix, internet, etc), good and bad, depends on how you use it. Im sad to see it go but can find other apps lol

however, Im more interested in why its being banned. Not only the china owned part. But because it allows negative views of the government or talk they dont agree with about politics.

So i wonder if this could lead to other sites that discuss views they dont like, say JW.org?

I live in a temporary reality- awaiting the day I wake up to life in the real world!

It's not primarily about stopping people from saying things the government doesn't want said. That happens everyday on every social media site and every news site. Besides, that was the very thing the Supreme Court was looking at. If this was about that (is the first amendment) then the Court wouldn't have allowed the ban to go through.

Now, is there a legitimate concern that the Chinese government has all this info about American's? That seems more of a prejudice issue than reality, but there is a lot of prejudice going around today ....

I did a search on the App Store and it directed me to this page and other apps made by this developer that are not available now:

Trump said today at a rally that "TikTok is back." I was thinking maybe that's just Trump and one of his statements that needs fact-checking, but the news seems to be all over the Internet.

It's interesting some news sources are saying Tiktok is saved.  Google play is stating downloads are paused due to current US requirements. The Apple App store says it's still unavailable as of 7:45 PDT.

I'm still trying to work out in my head how the resurrected will respond when we tell them that one of the biggest forms of entertainment is watching people talk to themselves in different costumes, and that the most popular form of "education" is watching people dance and point at words on a screen.

I saw one last year and quickly updated my TikTok preferences to make sure it wouldn't show up again.

I can't understand why they would do that, as it's so easy to turn the conversation into a debate in TikTok.

It's extremely risky, as there's a high chance for opposers to be drawn to the live and attempt to twist the truth. This could lead to innocent viewers forming a negative opinion of the organization.

Paul preached in public open spaces and in front of large crowds, I personally don't see the difference

Also the host would kick out the guests that were rude or argumentative

Perhaps they think it isn't any different than setting up a cart and visually inviting people to discuss the bible, but the reality is they are creating a spiritually dangerous situation.
