well this 'scandal' of finding horse meat in burgers and lasagne - sometimes up to 100% horse meat, has gone International. UK burgers and other processed meat meals were packed in Ireland that got their meat from Metz France, that imported it from Romania. The factory in Metz supplied many other supermarkets in UK, such as Asda/Wall-mart and International food processors such as Findus. They have been testing all their products and removing some from the shelves.

The worry is as in the short article Jenni quotes - due to the phenylbutizane injections given in horse medicine, causes aplastic anaemia in humans, so should not then get into the food chain in UK, but has in other countries despite EU rules. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-21383362

America has it's own different beef worries - an upcoming shortage apparently:

They now say that the reason so much horse meat is being exported from Romania is that new traffic rules in that country have recently banned the once regular use of horse-drawn and donkey-drawn carts on public roads, so many people now no longer have use for their animals and have sent them for slaughter causing a glut of equine meat .

The problem is that many packages of horse meat, that are being exported for food processing, their 'passport' papers and package labels are being tampered with/fraudulently altered to read beef and it is being now traced to Mafia gangs from Italy and similar gangs from Eastern Europe. The worry now is - Are they are also doing this with packages of meat that should be condemned as unfit for consumption, such as that with risks of BSE or other diseases!?:
