VATICAN CITY | Wed Mar 13, 2013 2:15pm EDT

(Reuters) - White smoke rose from the Vatican's Sistine Chapel on Wednesday signaling cardinals had elected a new pope to succeed Benedict and take charge of the troubled Roman Catholic Church.

At the same time the bells of St. Peter's pealed.

The election, on the first full day of voting by the 115 cardinals, came more quickly than many had expected after no obvious front runner had emerged following the surprise abdication of Benedict last month.

The identity of the new pope will be announced to the world from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica within an hour.

Jesuits are known for their work in education (founding schools, colleges, universities and seminaries), intellectual research, and cultural pursuits, and for their missionary efforts. Jesuits also give retreats, minister in hospitals and parishes and promote social justice and ecumenical dialogue.

Perhaps Catholic missionary efforts and schools will get a boost.

The "promoting social justice" part sounds interesting - perhaps more dabbling in politics than usual.

Plan ahead as if Armageddon will not come in your lifetime, but lead your life as if it will come tomorrow (w 2004 Dec. 1 page 29)

Soon .....

I wonder if this will prompt people to google the history of the Jesuits... I watched a documentary on YouTube and couldn't eat for three days!

I can answer that question... no. They don't research anything now.

Phillipians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are of serious concern, whatever things are righteous, whatever things are chaste, whatever things are lovable, whatever things are well-spoken-of, whatever things are virtuous, and whatever things are praiseworthy, continue considering these things.

I saw a news report the other night on TV where a spokesperson who was present at the 'pope-announcement-after-party' told of a TOAST that was made to the new pope.

The new pope who was being congratulated for his appointment (ie. 'being voted in'). The Pope responded by saying "may God forgive you all".

Apparently, it brought the house down in laughter. Little do they know that such a statement should be taken quite literally, as they all share collective responsibility for everything that happens.

"S.O.S." completely sums it up!

Fat chance of that.
