There's a Sherlock Holmes story where he admits to the same ignorance, saying it wouldn't make a bit of difference to his work...and he's right, lol!  

 

Of course, I have no trouble making allowances for a fictional character.  What used to be really painful, though, is when Jay Leno would go out on the street and show people pictures of very well-known public officials or ask them things like, 'Who did the U.S. fight in the Revolutionary War?' and they hadn't a clue how to answer.  THAT was even worse!

No, I think, unfortunately, they are the byproduct of the American public school system.  It wasn't like this in my (ahem) day!
