Moon Reader Pro 3.0

Recommended Posts

Hey, Moon Reader is one of the apps that is Material Design compliant.  You need to get used to it since Android ecosystem will be heading in that direction.

The community actually despised that old look that you are used to, because it is based on  gingerbread era. But you can have google Play Books if you want. There are alternatives like Google Play books which our family uses, one account, can open all epubs/pdf that the jw website offers.

What do you think of the entire new changes to Moon Reader Pro? I don't like it. Shelves are gone and it is an ugly white.

I like the new interface a lot. At the same time, it's only a visual change, not functional. Everything works the same.

I also like that now when you are reading a book and push the Back button, it goes back to the shelves rather than showing that useless black box. That was confusing. i had suggested that to the author, and am glad he listened.

What I find lacking in Moon+ Reader yet is a good classifying system to display books by categories or collections, as Mantano Reader does. I'd like to have some books set as "Meetings", others as "Studies", others as "Magazines", "Fiction", "Spanish", "Romanian", "English" and so on. The only way to do this currently is selecting those books as favorites, then assigning them a category. But it doesn't make sense to set all your books as favorites. Besides, you can put one book just in one category. For example, if you have the Watchtower set as "Meetings", then you can't have it also as "Magazines". i hope this is implemented in a future version.

With the recent update (3.0.1), they've added night mode on the "my shelf" screen. That's the only thing that was lacking the 3.0. Version according to me.

I've been using the pro version since the last 50% discount which was in August and in totaly loving it. I'm not thinking of using another reader for the time being.

Actually, I have been using the tags feature to catagorize my downloads. For example, I have my KMs tagged as "KM", My public magazines with a "Public" tag, study Watchtowers with a "Study" tag, etc.... I have also created a "Current" tag and will add that tag the the publications currently in use and then remove it when not. It is therefore possible to have publications in multiple catagories by using the tag feature.

As with all things new, it does take some getting used to. I experienced quite a bit of frustration having to do so. But what are you gonna do? start fresh with a different program that will also improve and require readjustment? One thing I do know is that there are many friends that are tech challenged & will need help to make things uncomplicated.

I have found that the new format has more features allowing more customization. Which in turn means THERE ARE MORE BUTTONS AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY DO AND CAN'T REMEMBER WHICH BUTTON I PUSHED TO GET THE THING I FOUND USEFUL! (pant, pant, pant).

So, I am compiling a list of desired commands.

1. Return to "Home" page so that I can select a different publication. When CBS is over I want the song book then KM, etc...

2. Go to " Table of contents" because I am not where I need to be.

3. The ability to enlarge the text because for some unknown reason not all publications look the same. I find that sometimes I just like to see more page while at others I like bigger letters.

4. "Exit Program" because I've had enough and will now look over my wife's shoulder and her printed publication.

The night mode was on the previous version as well. I stumbled on it and got to thinking that the black background would use less power as it would employ a lower lumins quotient. On that note though, I found that there is now a pallet with different colors for background as well as coloring for the letters. By the way, red on red doesn't work.

Thank you, Tony. I will have to look at tags. I thought it would be quite burdensome to have to tag every publication, but maybe it's the best option.

In this aspect I like the way Mantano Reader allows you to easily select books with a click and add them to a collection. I preferred Mantano in most aspects, but its fails miserably with ePub3, and also there is no way to save and restore your annotations apart from using Cloud, which must be paid for separately.

Tony, I think none of these have changed.

1. Push the Back button when you are reading a book and it will take you to the Library.

2. Push in the middle of the screen and a toolbar is displayed in the lower end of the screen. Select the Contents button and you're done.

3. Push in the middle of the screen and select Change size on the toolbar. Or you can set it so that you can easily control font size sliding your finger up or down in the right side of the screen.

4. Push the Back button from the main screen.

Personally i like aldiko with the wooden shelf look :P

I like Aldiko's look too. But the free version is very limited, and I won't risk buying the complete version without knowing what it does and what is does not. Does underlining work fine? Does it show scriptures in popup boxes? Does it support ePub and PDF?

im afraid moon reader is the best for now, since the scriptures come in a popup, and you can underline the text with multiple options.

Scriptures pop up in Mantano Reader too, which is what I had previously determined to be the best for me.

I'll give Moon Reader another gander though. I am a fan of Material Design so far.

I like the new design too.  The "shelves" are still there, but have a much different look, all the publications are more crammed together.  Carlos, I put all my publications in Moon Reader in their own catagory - like K.M's, study watchtowers, yearbooks etc.  Just hold down on the publication in your shelf, when it highlights, go to upper right corner and click on the first icon.  You can even choose a new cover for it and print any title you want on the cover.  The lines below all that enable you to make catagories and put them in them.

Moon Reader Pro just updated again and gives you the "night" theme for the shelf for those of us who don't like the white background. Also, in "options" when you are looking at your shelf, you can set how big the book images are now! I think the initial setting for the size of the book cover images is 110 - I set mine for 75 and now I can see everything on my shelf in one screen on my tablet.

Thank you, Ilias.

Bob, I also liked Mantano a lot at first. But its support for ePub3 (scriptures in popups, among other things) is still beta, and it doesn't work well. When I open a book as ePub3, it takes ages and works very slowly, and it doesn't allow the normal highlight mode. I didn't like Moon+ Reader's interface, but it has a lot of customization options to improve it.

Highlighting in Mantano was a pain in the neck. It often selected several lines, or something completely different from what I intended. It was very imprecise. I even suggested its author to include a Delete button together with the color buttons, so that I could delete a wrong highlight without having to exit highlight mode, deleting it, entering highlight mode again. He hasn't included my request so far. I thought it was a problem with my device's resolution, but in Moon+ Reader highlighting works much better, so it is not.

Another problem with Mantano is that there is no way to backup your notes and highlighs unless you pay the additional Mantano Cloud service. That's crazy! Let's say you have your Bible Teach book well prepared, with all answers underlined, scriptures commented and some illustrations or additional ideas annotated. Now you need to replace your device, or to hard reset it. You will lose everything. In Moon+ Reader you can easily backup your notes.

How to make the scriptures pop up in mantano

Dilip, long-press the book you want to open. When the menu is displayed, select "Open it as EPUB3". Scriptures and footnotes will now appear as popups, but highlighting will be much harder to use. This really needs to be fixed.

Thank you, Brigette. That's the way I have them too. But it only allows to put a book in one category. For me it would be very useful to be able to put them in more than one. Moon+ Reader's author promised he would consider it for a future version.

I thought the author of that program was a brother, because he uses samples of our magazines in Moon+ Reader screenshots at Play Store. But a couple days ago it opened with a Christmas greeting, so he it seems he is not a Witness after all. Probably a big ratio of his customers are Witnesses and that's why he uses our publications as samples.

I have had no problems highlighting with Mantano, it is very smooth and precise for me. But that may be because I have a Samsung Note tablet with the Bluetooth S-pen stylus.

I prefer to be taken to the scriptures through the links rather than having them "pop up". That allows me to highlight portions of the scriptures if I choose to. Once finished studying an article, I make a backup and save it to my laptop just in case.

Obviously my tablet's screen sensitivity is much lower than that of the Note with the S-pen... and its price too! It simply works better for me with Moon+ Reader.

Yes, you have a point about underlining scriptures. But popups are so cute! :lol2: Anyway most of the time I prefer to look up scriptures in my bible, so that I can see the context.

How do you do a backup?

How do you do a backup?

I use a file manager (ES file explorer) and go to the Montano folder and copy and paste the saved file to my laptop via WiFi. but you can also go to the file you want to backup in Mantano's list of files, put a check mark in the box next to is and choose "share". There you will get choices to email it, upload it to Google drive, dropbox (if installed) and Box.net, etc.
