Calendar misgivings

I'm getting confused. This year our calendar is printed with Monday as the first day of the week rather than Sunday. Because of the placement of the days of the week on the calendar, it's throwing me off in a number of different ways.

For example, I was talking to a doctor's secretary this morning about getting an appointment. She said she could give me one on March 9th. I looked at the calendar, and because of where the 9th is placed during the week, it looked like it was a Sunday! But she reminded me, "Actually, the 9th is a Monday." :perplexed:

No, I don't think I'm getting senile, but it's because of where the days are placed during the week on our calendar. I think last year we had a choice of which calendar we wanted to use, the usual Sunday-Saturday schedule, or the new Monday-Sunday week. But this year there's no choice. I'm wondering what else I can do to get used to this calendar, short of going to the bank and getting a "normal" one.

Does anyone else have this problem? :help:

Eric, have a look at this post from some months ago:

It seems your congregation ordered the wrong, European style, calendar. :)

Curious. Last year, I think both calendar styles were on jw.org. But this year there is only one—the Monday-Sunday version, ca15_E. So I thought it natural that's the one I got from the hall. I'm going to have to ask our literature servant some questions.

Is this how you European's have calendars printed? Mondays first? Interesting, I didn't know this. Makes sense to me though.

Yes, Monday to Sunday. :)

When I went to school I had an old dictionary, and was surprised to read there "Sunday: the first day of the week". Everybody knew Sunday is the last day of the week, not the first! :) But any Spanish dictionary now says that Sunday is the seventh day of the week. I don't know where that difference comes from.

I hope this helps:

*** rs p. 346 Sabbath ***

How did Sunday come to be the principal day of worship for much of Christendom?
Although Christ was resurrected on the first day of the week (now called Sunday), the Bible contains no instruction to set aside that day of the week as sacred.
“The retention of the old Pagan name of ‘Dies Solis,’ or ‘Sunday,’ for the weekly Christian festival, is, in great measure, owing to the union of Pagan and [so-called] Christian sentiment with which the first day of the week was recommended by Constantine [in an edict in 321 C.E.] to his subjects, Pagan and Christian alike, as the ‘venerable day of the Sun.’ . . . It was his mode of harmonizing the discordant religions of the Empire under one common institution.”—Lectures on the History of the Eastern Church (New York, 1871), A. P. Stanley, p. 291.

“The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance, the wise grows it under his feet.”

Thank you, Daniela. But then it would be more logical if the week began on Sunday in Europe, where the influence of the Constantine-founded Catholic and Orthodox churches is stronger, and on Monday in America, where the first settlers were Protestant, not the other way around. Hmmmm, strange.

While it is not especially hard to adapt to a "different" calendar or of keeping track of time (we use a 24 hour clock at work), I find changes like this somewhat upsetting. I know it is not my place to question such things and I trust the brothers, but some vestiges of "normalcy" are comforting.

My sentiments exactly, Dave. I use a 24-hour clock at work too, and I am totally used to that. It's more logical—at least to me. I'm not sure I agree with Ava's thought above that Monday-Sunday makes more sense though, even though Monday is the first day of the week for the Society. Since Saturday was the seventh day Sabbath, then it would be logical the first day of the week would be Sunday. That's the "normalcy" that I find comforting too.

At our next meeting I am definitely going to see if I can get a "normal" ca15s-E calendar. This "abnormal" calendar is driving me up the wall!

For me it's really more about Monday is normally the first day of the week for everyone.  Monday is the first day of the week for school, for many people who work like me Monday is the first day of my work week.  Sat and Sun are the weekends and come after the work week which is for me Mon-Fri.

That is why I have always thought the calendar should be Mon-Sun.

Yeah, right, uh-huh, sure ...   I'll meet you all back here on next TWOsday  (that's the 2nd day of the week)   ...    go ahead, mark it on your calendar!  (that's the 2nd box, not the third)

wait till you flip the calendar over and see that they moved March!

Rather than wait until our next meeting, I called our literature servant today and told him about the calendar thing. I asked if he could order me a ca15s-E calendar, like Stavro's post said, with the week starting on Sunday.

He called me back an hour later. He said he went to jw.org and logged in to the literature servants' corner (or whatever it's called), but couldn't find any such thing! He looked for the the ca15s-E code, and never found it. He looked for a different calendar besides the usual one we got at the hall, but... no go. Well, he finally asked me where I got the information from about this other calendar. (Maybe he doesn't think it was a reliable source?)

Hhmmm. I'm frustrated. Do any literature servants in the forums here know where our LS can find the Sunday-Saturday calendar?

The literature servant I was speaking to got the code in September, and when I asked him last night he said he couldn't find the code at all when he put in the latest order. Either the traditional style has since been discontinued, or the first code was an error and/or misreading.

And what about your first Day of the week in the wt study edition and km ? Monday or Sunday ?

For us, in Europe, we start the spiritual program week on Monday and it "end" with the "weekend" whit include Saturday or Sunday worship

By the way, Monday is the first day defined by the International Standardization Organization (ISO 8601 - go on Wikipedia for further explanations)

And Sunday is the first day defined by the Judaic Islamic and some Christian tradition... (make a search on Wikipedia with "Sunday")

I just don't use it.

In Vietnamese, there isn't names for the days of the week. Instead there are just called - day 1 thru 7. Yes, you guessed it - Sunday is called Day 1 and Saturday Day 7 .

Edit: I wonder if a Chinese one that starts on Monday can even be found. All the ones I have seen start on Sunday.

What is it like in India?

I guess our thinking has to change (change is hard sometimes)

This weeks WT says week of Feb. 23 (Monday) - March 1

This weeks KM says week starting March 2 (Monday)

it's been that way for a while, now our calendars are following the same order. (starting on a Monday)

we have been going through a lot of changes lately, and I'm sure there will be many more   ...

I just upload the last wt study in Vietnamese: your study week start on day "2" to day "1"... so Monday to Sunday.

It's perhaps a way to make standardization of the "week" all around the world for jw's

By the way, on the bible, no name on the days ... except Shabbat... all others days have numbers. See Mat.28:1

So the "first day" is the period of 24h started on Saturday sundown to next Sunday sundown

If you want more explanations, search "week" on "it"

Well well well.... I'm sure we will make our "new world week" after harmaguedon

So, Sunday really is the 7th day Sabbath (and the Catholics were right all along) and all along I thought it was Saturday - day 7. Its good to see us conform to their standard. :nope::lol1:
