Expressions you've heard that stuck ...

I just heard an expression on a TV program that reminded me of one I have used for years. This thread is for expressions you like that get some point across ....

 

When I used to do carpet (I cleaned, repaired, dyed, and installed) we used to tell some of the apartment managers when they wanted us to save some really worn out carpet:

I can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear - just a better looking sow's ear

 

The one I just heard was:

Yeah, and you can put lipstick on a Gorilla - but it's still a gorilla.

I like to sum up an evening spent with fiends with"Don't think it wasn't cause really..." Keeps them guessing.

Around here it's  "You can put your boots in the oven, but that don't make 'em biscuits".

Jerry, do you use to spend evenings with fiends? That explains a lot.

I was a partner in a painting and decorating firm and the two others jokingly said that that we needed a motto. I suggested "Nothing - is too much trouble."

When I have a talk about elderly brothers, I always say there are no old Christians. There are young Christians with little experience and young Christians with more experience. A sister who is in her eighties says she is not old, rather she has accumulated a lot of youth along the years.
