Finally Cut the Cord!! Who's with me!!

Recommended Posts

I cut cable a little over 2 years ago, after my husband died.  One little social security check doesn't go far.  Sometimes I miss seeing the local news & weather but I  do not miss cable itself.

I changed over from cable tv to subscribing to youtubetv......not Youtube, but youtubetv. I like it because I can choose the channels I want without them telling me what the packages will contain.

With cable you might want a particular channel. If it’s a popular channel like TMC, they gouge you, then give you other junk channels you don’t really want, to make you think you’re getting a good deal. Youtubetv doesn’t do that. You can individually pick all your channels.

It takes a little to adjust to the youtubetv format but I’m used to it now and like it.

I have been thinking about YouTubeTV. Thanks for the info on that.

Is this an expensive service?

Is it on demand, or do you download a program guide?

TIA

It’s internet tv instead of cable. It’s about half the price of cable tv. You get to select each channel you want, rather than a preloaded package. Of course HBO and those kind of channels are extra. It has all the same channels you get on cable including your local channels.

You first have to have an internet service....then you can setup YouTube tv. You also need to have a smart tv. Won’t work with older tv.

After you select your list of channels, then you can scroll through them. It allows you to record programs to watch when you want etc....

You can’t change channels as fast as cable, but after while you adjust and you don’t notice the difference. Overall I think it’s a better value and less money.

Of course, cost is a relative thing ... if your Internet Service charges more for a "Data Only" connection than they do for a "bundle" - the total cost of the Internet Service and the Streaming Service you select (Sling, YouTubeTV, Hulu, etc.) may not be that much less ... especially if  the Internet Service limits and/or throttles your data once you "cut the cord".

ok, I "cut the cord" over 5 years ago when I realized most of our tv viewing was  OTA ( over the air) I had installed a couple of dedicated antennas in the attic along with boosters, the catch is this - to watch internet tv ( JW Broadcast etc.) you need a good fast internet service provider which i already had, I now have 3 tv's each with it's own antenna ( one upstairs we seldom watch) and each with a Roku, well after installing my Ring doorbell I needed even a faster internet so I upgraded,  it's costing me $70/mo. unlimited, plus added Sling tv to watch sports and History channel and auto shows, but only $30/mo cancel anytime, that's what's good, the cancel when you want and resubscribe when you want on all internet tv, Sling, Hulu, YouTube etc.You are still going to pay maybe just not as much having all, cable & internet

I failed to mention 2 of my tv's are 10+ years old and the 3rd one, a 50 inch samsung, that i  put upstairs, was given to me by my son in law who got it free from a customer who had gotten a newer/bigger one, so didn't want anyone thinking I had too many sets and only 2 eyes! 😉 I installed the antennas myself easy for me as I used to work for Comcast cable years ago, early 80's.

So, last month, my wife and I finally decided to ditch the overpriced, racket-like, cable package.  We were paying $200/mo. But that's not the issue. When we first signed up four years ago, our bill was a "modest" $120/mo. Then it slowly increased each year, to where it was when we cut it. I got so tired of seeing that $200 leave my checking account every month, and we really don't watch a lot of TV because we both work (I'm full time and she's part time) so are not at home a ton.

So this month, it was refreshing to see my bill cut in half (I kept the 200 mbps internet service for streaming). I'm tying out Sling TV for the month. Its pretty good seeing that I really only want sports channels.

So anyone else "cut the cord"?

Did the same thing about a year ago: said bye bye to cable and home phone for the same reasons: cost was way out of line.

Now we use our cellphones as home phone and stream whatever we want via Roku or AppleTV.

Sling is I think  one of the better options, I have it now, I've tried Hulu & Hulu Live ( live is too expensive) unless you don't have an antenna, regular  Hulu  is cheap to watch next day tv we also have Amazon prime tv but not much on there for my taste. I go on/off throughout the year.

This is gonna end up just as expensive as cable.  Right now still fine.  I wonder if NBC will move their stuff off of HULU.
