L😳OS ANGELES - An estimated 20 patients were treated at an elementary school in the Cudahy area in southeast Los Angeles after an apparent fuel spill on the school's playground from an aircraft that was diverted back to the Los Angeles International Airport, officials said.

A Delta Air Lines flight bound for Shangai from LAX was diverted minutes after takeoff, officials said. The plane safely made an emergency landing Tuesday afternoon and no injuries were reported.

Jet fuel spill from the aircraft was reported at multiple locations, including Park Avenue Elementary in Cudahy and San Gabriel Avenue Elementary in South Gate, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

LAFD also reported spilled jet fuel on the 300 block of 93rd Street in South Los Angeles.

This is a breaking news story. Check back for updates.

The allowed take-off weight for an air liner far exceeds the acceptable landing weight. Failure to reduce landing weight could raise the landing speed and required lenght beyond what the runway could handle. The other danger is a landing gear failure whould cause a tremendously h fatal consequinces. A long distance flight such as this likely had to dump tons of fuel to attemp a landing under an emergency declaration. Usually pilots prefer to make a fuel dump from high enough that the fuel evaporates befor getting to ground level, the othe possibility is dump over the ocean.

Dumping fuel in this manner becomes a non-event, wash your car, wash your hair, etc, as compared to "HUNDREDS DIE IN BOTCHED LANDING!"

ABC News now says: JUST IN: At least 60 people treated, including about 20 school children, after passenger jet dumps fuel over Southern California as it prepared for emergency landing at LAX.

And it was engine trouble according to the article

Jet fuel isn't good for you but it's not extremely dangerous either. The typical HazMat response to spills is to throw some absorbent (Aka Kitty Litter) and shovel it up. However, any hydrocarbon that is ingested or aspirated can cause problems. Some people have severe dermatitis issues with hydrocarbons. Getting in the eye will be painful. I hope the kids are ok.

Jet fuel is just kerosene, a rather common fuel.  Not reccomended for skin contact but I can rememeber when it was commonly used to kill head head lice. When a pioneer working during  harvest I worked on a farm where the cans used for field hands drinking water had been washed out with kerosene, the cold water quenched ones thirst but stilled the  desire to hang around the water cooler. I complained to the farmer about it, he denied he had done anything. Sensing I might be a trouble maker in the harvest he put me in a warehouse job where there was no one to talk to. I had been the only non-Mexican working in the field. :(

The first refinery that I worked at produced jet fuel. It's boiling range is between naphtha (gasoline) and diesel. I use to use jet to clean up my work area. About the only difference between kerosene and jet is the jet treater unit that strips out all the water and sulphur.

The last refinery I worked at didn't make jet. They made the naphtha endpoint a little higher and let the rest fall into the diesel.

And I could not determine what short term applies to. I would assume short term in this report is working in an environment of refueling military jets on a short term, a few months, a few years? Not exactly the topic here.

For those individuals directly affected by this incident, fire officials advise the following:

• Please be sure to wash any exposed/contaminated clothing separately with regular    detergent.
• Make sure to do a full head-to-toe shower with soap and water while they do not expect any significant side effects as a result of this incident, if you do feel like you are experiencing a health related issue, please seek consult with your primary physician.

Also a large team of attorneys are standing buy to seek compensation for such an horrendous act perpetrated on the unsuspecting public! (last line added by me) 😏

I can not understand the hysteria coming from this event. JP-1 is kereosene, nothing more. Military JP-5 has aditives needed for military purposes. If my daughter was doused in JP-1 I would immediatly say take a shower, use lots of soap and keep the windows open until the smell goes away. It is far less of a problem than common auto gas.

Does anybody get this excited when somebody gets sprayed with Diesel?

Calm down don't panic, th sky did not fall an Los Angeles today.

You bet, people are going to panic and sue, that is the nature of things.

I would like to relate an actual episode of chemical cotamination. It took place at a truck parking area at boeing Field in Seattle, actually downtown Seattle nowdays. A strange liquid was reported as seeping out of large enclosed trailer in the park on the lot. The first to respond was a Washington State trooper. He carefully approached the trailer from upwind. When he got to the tailgate he bent over to smell the liquid, went into siezure  passing out as he scrambelled away from the trailer. Bomb squads and all kinds of emergency services arrived on the scene. The WSP officer was ambulance to Harbor View Hospital.

Hours later when agents in chemical overalls and breathing aperatus opened the trailer what they discovered could have been nerve gas but it actually was THERE was a pile of ice melting in the bed of the trailer, nothing more, the strange liquid seeping from the door was... ... you guessed it, WATER.

I do not know what happened to the officer, I imagine he got a job in Alaska*.

This a true story of panic and it lasted for most of the day, Mighty message was "Parents don't let you kids play in the sprinkler."

No one will actulley suffer from a light drizzel of kerosene though many will sue.

* There is no known record of him sueing anyone, can you sue for being the laughing stock of Seattle? This is a true story.

Water is not safe to inhale, yet is harmless when doused upon an individual.

DO NOT GET THAT IN YOUR MOUTH!

Unfortunatelyas child I was subject to that a couple of times. What it taught me was to become a better liar, a trait that took years to overcome. :(

All my soap in mouth incidents were entirely accidental.

The one time I used lye soap it was under adult supervision.
