Australian woman struck down with COVID-19 says her symptoms were no worse than a 'sore throat and a headache' - so we should 'calm down'

  • Bridget Wilkins was diagnosed last week after flying from London to Brisbane
  • She called for hysteria to stop, but said she has no idea how she caught the virus
  • Ms Wilkins said coronavirus symptoms aren't as severe as headlines suggest
  • Coronavirus has infected more than 109,000 people and killed at least 3,800

Ms Wilkins said she may be discharged from hospital this week and commended Queensland Health officials for her treatment while in quarantine.

'The message I'd like to put out to the world is that maybe someone has it already, and it's very common symptoms, like a headache, or a sore throat or just being tired,' she said.

'There's a lot of hype and hysteria on the news around coronavirus,' she said.

'There should be. It's very serious, particularly for the elderly and people with existing conditions.

'But I think we have to calm down, because for most people, like myself, it is just a long cold that we can shake off.

She was bad enough to go to hospital though - most who have the less severe version get better at home.  And they usually only take the more severe cases to hospital they don't hospitalize for low grade colds/flus.

It seems as though 81% of people who are infected with COVID-19 only experience mild symptoms. Which is a great things. But we don't want to be in the 4% who have serious symptoms. So remember to be careful and take proper precautions.

And interestingly, sadly 15% of Iran's death rate is 40 years old and below.

Yes Brother Steven that 4% isn't just elderly it's also youngers ones who have health complications. Lots of young people have cancer and other debilitating diseases. It is those we are protecting by taking the measures the Govts request.

I found that article a little 'me' orientated.

Sounds like a selfish madam to me. You know the "I'm all right Jack" type of people.

It’s true it may be mild for her and the majority of others, but the “hype” is because the health system can’t cope with the spike of serious cases if we don’t act now. It’s to flatten the curve for everyone to have a fair chance of surviving this, not just those with minor issues.

Plus, don’t count your chickens  before they hatch. Anyone can get reinfected. And It depends on how your immune system reacts. A lot of the younger ones dies because their system went haywire. Think of the early loss of the whistleblower doctor in Wuhan. No time for complacency but for us to be

Hearing survivor stories should hopefully help the panic. As bad as this is, I'm glad to know it's not 100% fatal and everyone who gets it is not going to die.  I think a lot of fear is because people are afraid what will happen if they get sick.

I about cried reading that article.

Don t forget it's people that have compromised immune systems so this could be someone in there 30s or 40s that has diabetes, high blood pressure or heart problems. In some cases people don't even know they have a underlying health issue, in which covid 19 has a more stronger effect. It's important therefore that we be moderate in habits ound in mind eating healthy and exercising regularly get your heart rate up regularly. It's been said that if you could put exercise into a pill everyone would be taking it, it has such a profound effect on our bodies strengthening our bodies, releasing hormones that prevent disease, indeed as God's word say says bodily training is beneficial for a little 2Timothy.

The dead in Wuhan in their 30's, 40's and 50's were reported to be healthy. But perhaps they did have something they weren't aware of. Original article:

Meanwhile, a study published on January 24 in The Lancet medical journal found what it called a "cytokine storm" in infected patients who were severely ill. A cytokine storm is a severe immune reaction in which the body produces immune cells and proteins that can destroy other organs.

Some experts say this could explain deaths in younger patients. Statistics from China show some people in their 30s, 40s and 50s, who were not known to have had prior medical issues, have also died from the disease.

In France, more than half of coronavirus patients in intensive care are under 60, suggesting it's not just the elderly at risk.

We just had this beautiful reminder via jwbroadcast that the Coronavirus is giving us all an opportunity to be obedient not just to the many rules and guidelines but also to the principles behind them such as the principle love of neighbor.  "We have a  opportunity to practice being obedience for the future."

I think the information campaign (which is good) has been mishandled. While they NEED to preserve the hospital beds for those who truly need it, and make us aware of that very important step, the media makes it sound as if catching it is a death sentence, which would have the opposite of affect because a cough or sore throat would cause a mad rush to the doctor.

That's why my television has been turned off the last few nights. I only read the news now, and stick to the CDC and WHO.

Very scant coverage on the 84,000+ that have recovered. Most only report the deaths and new cases. Its freaking people out.

Well, calming down is always good advice. But it's not as simple as that.

For most people covid19 will not be different than a flu or a cold. For others, it will mean developing a pneumonia that will leave permanent sequels in their lungs. Still for others it will mean dying being unable to breath.

The problem is not so much the mortality of the virus itself, which is low, but the easiness with which it spreads. If hundreds of people who just have "a sore throat and a headache" go to ER, there are no doctors nor resources for others who have other pathologies. And when those hundreds become thousands, the health system becomes completely overloaded and doctors have to choose who they will treat and who they will send home to die.

So it's good to keep calm but also take measures to avoid being infected. America and Australia are making the same mistakes Europe made, and they will only take serious measures when many thousands are already infected. Had those measures been taken one or two weeks earlier, many could have been saved.

This is the current restriction in Australia regarding

Religious gatherings, places of worship or funerals (in enclosed spaces and other than very small groups and where the 1 person per 4 square metre rule applies).
