Spanish music

Recommended Posts

Since I've been learning Spanish for a couple of years, I also love listening to Spanish music. Over the past years I have found my personal favourite artists and bands, but I always try to expand my collection with new songs.

Do you have recommendations for me?

Just in order to explain my taste - I have large playlists of the Spanish singers Malu, David Bustamante, David Bisbal, .... Also from Latin America I love many songs of Luis Fonsi, Juanes and the Mexican band Camila.

So, my taste is mostly pop/rock...

Can you recommend Spanish or Latin American artists - or maybe just specific songs?

I "admire" you, although I lived in Spain for 2-3 years I could never get into Spanish music...

Man was created as an intelligent creature with the desire to explore and understand :)

Well, for me music is a main key for learning a language as I'm very fond of music. I learn a lot of vocabulary out of songs I love, and as I sing them very often, I can remember the vocabulary 😊

Learning songs is a great way to learn languages! I learned most of my English by translating songs and learning them by heart. I remember the first song in English I learned and translated was Chris de Burgh's "Lady in Red". Wow! What a blast from the past!

Greg, like you I am not much into current Spanish music. It sounds all the same to me. But I still listen with affection to the bands that were popular when I was a teenager. The 80s were a time of great effervescence in the Spanish cultural panorama. Music bands mushroomed everywhere and concerts and culture were promoted by the authorities, trying to distance themselves of the years of ultra-Catholic Franco's dictatorship. Although I remember a lot more from the 90s than the 80s. "Héroes del Silencio", "Duncan Dhu" and "Los Secretos" were probably my all time favorite Spanish bands. Mor recently I also like "Enrique Bunbury" very much. If you search Youtube for "pop español años 90" or "pop español años 80" you will find a lot of music you might like.

Here are a few Youtube links to some songs I like, you know Youtube takes you to similar content after one song is finished, be careful!:

Álex Ubago and Amaia Montero - Sin miedo a nada

Tahúres Zurdos - Llueve

Celtas Cortos - Lluvia en soledad

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kC9lLfrisjM

Los Secretos - Pero a tu lado

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5PoEObhv_Y

Quique González - La ciudad del viento

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpQG2bnI-do

Enrique Bunbury - Lady Blue

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AY8z7ZXJ-Vg

Some days ago I stumbled upon this jewel of a song by a Mexican band I don't know anything about:

Trágico Ballet - El beso del silencio

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpGEN11oIVc

If you need help to understand any of those lyrics (or any others) feel free to PM me. I will be happy to help. :)

That's interesting, I love that song but I find the Spanish translation funny - Dama de ayer.

I recently discovered Natalia Lafourcade. She does pop, but I've especially been enjoying her traditional songs.

I agree, the Spanish lyrics (and their delivery) are a bit weird. Poor Chris got entangled with the exotic Spanish sounds.

Natalia Lafourcade has a very sweet voice. I haven't listened much to her but maybe I should. :)

I really like the Gypsy Kings too!  It’s more flamenco based.

Marc Anthony is pretty popular. Some of his songs stand out a little more than others. All salsa pretty much.

Gloria Estefan had an album based on her Cuban roots. It was a really good one. From the 1990’s I believe.

I like old Cuban music.
Beny More’

Celia Cruz (just have to watch which ones you listen to from her)

The soundtrack from The Mambo Kings can give you a good start on some old classics

my husband and I chose a wedding song from that album.
Como Fue

Jer 29:11-“For I well know the thoughts I am thinking toward you, declares Jehovah, thoughts of peace, and not calamity, to give you a future and a hope.”

Psalm 56:3-“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”
Romans 8:38-”For I am convinced...”

Oh also Shakira’s first Spanish album had some great pop music on it. The last song....Arabic roots. Can’t remember the name but I love it!

Here's a few more I remember, you might already know of them. I haven't checked the lyrics to all the songs, just trying to give some more possibilities.

I used to like this cd from Moenia

And this one from  La Ley

Edit: I tried to link the CD, but it just linked one song

Song from La Oreja de Van Gogh

Song from Juan Luis Guerra
