Why Is There Something Rather Than Nothing?

(German philosopher, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, the man who  bequeathed us calculus and the binary system at the heart of modern computers, died 300 years ago, in 1716.

Leibniz first posed the question that is the title of this topic.

Why is there something rather than nothing?

Why is there is a universe at all? The question is a challenging one because it seems perfectly possible that there might have been nothing whatsoever – no Earth, no stars, no galaxies, no universe.

Leibniz thought that the fact that there is something and not nothing requires an explanation.

The explanation he gave was that -

God wanted to create a universe – the best one possible – which makes God the simple reason that there is something rather than nothing.

I am looking forward to meeting Mr. Leibniz.

:D

100%

I think on this sometimes, how amazing it is how any of us exist at all, and not only that, but that... Jehovah just exists. But why? How? Just Gottfried put it, why is there "something" and not nothing (Jehovah included). Only He could ever answer such a thing, but even then I don't think we'd ever comprehend.

I struggle with philosophies.  I just don’t understand their arguments - it’s all babble to me.  I’m glad Mr Liebnitz gave the right answer 😆.

It's people I find who have more "metaphysical oriented" minds, is the best way I can put it.

I dwell on it from time to time, but not for too long.

It makes my head hurt.  :D
