Anyone got ladder skill suggestions?

Recommended Posts

My house has three floors and I need to maintain the outside cladding and reseal around windows.
I managed to do ground floor then between ground floor and first floor.
It took me a few hours to calm down enough even with safety gear to do between the first and second floor.

My issue is I cannot bring myself to go to the next floor. My mind screams at me “don’t be stupid” lol.
I secure the ladders with ropes to a solid beam inside the house. I have a full body safety harness and gear to attach myself to the ladders through the harness.

Anyone on here dealt with similar and knows of a way to stay calm as it needs to be done.

(Side note. Don’t buy a tall house. In the new world I’m all for bungalows.  )

Thank you.
With my research I had not come across the side rails extending 3ft above.  Common sense really but I had not thought about it.
I also had no idea about the locks. I use them while moving the ladder but never locked them off when climbing. Never even registered as I assumed the weight would have been enough.
I will do in future though.

There is a lot of information available about Fall Protection, let me know if you need anything specific.

I hope this doesn't violate the letter or intent of the recent announcement, but your safety is important to me and I hope you find this useful.

I was considering getting a rope stop, sometimes called a rope grab.
Similar to what mountain climbers use. You attach a rope at the top of the ladder then tie it off at the bottom. Then the rope stop is connected to the rope and linked to your harness. If you happen to fall the rope stop works like seatbelts in a car.

The ladder itself is tied off as well.

My ladders have a stabiliser bar at the bottom to stop any spinning or tilting within reason.

I would recommend that you have a spotter watching you the whole time so they can call for help. Please ensure you are familiar with the hazards of using a fall protection harness.

The information I found was more about how tight it should be.
Mid chest at the front. Between shoulder blades at the back.
Should be able to pass a flat hand under the straps that go around the top of your thighs. Finally attach the waist. Mine has a 5 or 6 inch wide back support built in.
Limit the fall distance to a maximum of two to three rungs.

Thank you for the information you have provided so far. A great help.

Whether using a rope or safety belt or a full harness, it should be remembered that it might stop a fall but even a full harness can cause serious injury (even death) if there is no one to rescue you from dangling in the safety device.  In LDC "fall protection" training, you are taught to make a safety loop of rope and get your foot into it quickly so you can stand up in the loop and take the weight off the harness.  With the circulation restricted by your weight, serious injury can follow quickly.

Greg recommended renting a JLG of which is very easy to use and maneuver but they need to be close to level for heights you are talking about. another option is to rent a Scissor Lift but it also needs to be relatively level.
