NEWS ALERT | European Court Issues Landmark Judgment Against Russia in Favor of Jehovah’s Witnesses

On June 7, 2022, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) released a landmark judgment against Russia in favor of Jehovah’s Witnesses. The ECHR declared that it was unlawful for Russia to ban Jehovah’s Witnesses. It ordered Russia to discontinue all pending criminal proceedings against Jehovah’s Witnesses, to release all those in prison, as well as to return all the confiscated properties or pay adequate compensation.

On the same day, the Court also issued a judgment against Lithuania for denying one of our brothers an exemption to military service.

Nah, Russia can simply ignore it

It means an important voice has spoken up on our behalf. This does not mean that Russia will comply. They have a complicated relationship to the ECHR and will comply only if it does not break their own laws. They will claim that Jehovah’s witnesses are banned, even though their actions tell a different story.

I wonder the post-Putin scenario

I don't know, I'm not imposing a curse or anything like that but he would get out of there just leaving life and entering history...
would that mean that some other president would be elected or even if someone took the force?

The country is full of economic sanctions, it is plunging into a bad situation

if there was a human savior there, the paths would take the other side for the world stage

maybe even an opening for the brothers and even close to peace and security with other countries?

Yes, sure true, the issue though, particularly for those outside of North America, is getting the title mixed-up with the Washington Post - it has happened a few times in the past when brothers and sisters have directly passed on news links to me from the Washington Times.... when I tactfully mention to them that it's the Times, and NOT the Post, they just didn't realise, and where surprised.

 

For example take a look at the post below, from this very forum.... original poster says "I don't know how reliable Washington Times", to which another poster replies that "The Washington Post has a good reputation in journalistic circles" - hmmm..... yes, the confusion amongst brothers and sisters is both real, and the mix-ups happen.

Great write-up.  Summarizes all 20 complaints to which the ruling applies.  One complaint as recent as 2019, and it normally takes the ECHR about 7 years to adjudicate.

 

Assuming this news will reach Putin, I hope he doesn't flip-out and come down even harder on our friends.  His war isn't going so well, he could be very unstable and this defeat could tip him further.

It is now being reported by the Moscow Times online website:

 

Europe’s Top Rights Court Rules Against Russia’s Jehovah’s Witnesses Ban

The Strasbourg-based court ordered Moscow to release the 91 Jehovah’s Witnesses currently in Russian jails, pay 3.5 million euros ($3.7 million) in damages and either return seized property or pay 60 million euros ($64 million) in compensation.

But Russia seems unlikely to carry out the judgment, with lawmakers swiftly passing legislation Tuesday to end the ECHR’s jurisdiction. The bill, which must now be approved by Russia’s upper house of parliament and signed by President Vladimir Putin, sets March 16 as the cut-off date for recognized rulings.

What caught my attention is that the 7 member judges were not unanimous.
It was 6:1 in almost judgements.

Then I saw the list of judges.
You guessed it: One was Russian.

The KoN is incorrigible.
