We are in a "Holding Pattern"

Recommended Posts

With the impending arrival of hurricane Ian this week to the Florida west coast, we received encouragement to make sure we have our "preparations" in place. With the uncertainty of the path the storm will take, we also do not know if we will have in-person MWM, Zoom MWM or no MWM ... a lot will depend on where the storm hits, the amount of damage and the availability of electricity.

At this point - we are in a holding pattern as we wait to see where and what Ian does

Watched about this on Ryan Hall Ya’all on YouTube. The uncertainty of the path of this thing has to be unnerving though.

My advice, come on up to Tennessee or further north! All good advice from the CDC, but what is high ground in Florida? My prayers are with you all! May Jehovah carry all of you through these trying times! Flooding can occur in a very short time frame (flash flooding ) at least you have a warning.

National Hurricane Center director calls Ian forecast a "near worst-case scenario" for the Tampa area

https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/hurricane-ian-update-today-09-26-22/h_001e127d943e5e8f89bff869c21f08bd

For residents in the Tampa Bay area, “it's time to stop looking on the internet and hoping that it'll go away. It's time to start acting,” Jamie Rhome, the National Hurricane Center acting director, tells CNN.

The current forecast track for Hurricane Ian puts all of the Tampa Bay region on the right side of the storm, which would see winds push water northward into Tampa Bay, maximizing the inundation from storm surge. The current storm surge forecast for this area is up to 10 feet.

If this storm track and intensity materializes, he warns residents that “this is a near worst case approach angle coming in from the south and west and stalling,” Rhome said. “With it slowing down, this would be a near worst case approach angle.”

Getting away from the coast is "high ground". Since Florida does not have any mountainous terrane, flashfloods are not as great a threat as areas where water can gather to cause such a flood - however, just plain old-fashioned slow-flooding is still a concern.

We live about as far inland as you can in Florida so, flashfloods are not as much of a concern as high winds and storm damage as well as extended power outage.

Latest best guess for Hurricane Ian’s path. NHC currently predicts that Hurricane Ian will slow down as it reaches land.

NHC currently has Ian topping out as a category 4 hurricane with 140 mph winds Tuesday night through Wednesday morning, when it will be to the west of Key West, Florida. The 12Z Monday run of the DTOPS model gave a 91% chance that Ian would intensify by 65 mph in 48 hours, becoming a Cat 4 with 145 mph wind by 12Z Wednesday. The top two intensity models for making 4- and 5-day forecasts in 2021, the HMON and the HWRF, predicted with their 12Z Monday runs that Ian would reach category 4 strength with 140-150 mph winds on Wednesday.

I just talked to my mom. It is heading straight for their area. They live in a very strong building inland not in an evacuation zone and are staying put. She says I-4 is every lane bumper to bumper. I asked what is their plan B and my stepdad said their laundry room. My brother and his family live south of them also inland but still pretty close to Venice where it’s expected to make landfall. Ugh!!

I’m having flashbacks to 2005 before Charlie and like 4 other hurricanes in a row, sitting inside our shuttered-up condo, trying to do a million loads of laundry ahead of time in case the power went out, glued to the news eating all our emergency stash of Vienna sausages and crackers 😅

Still no power - running n generator

Looks like we dodged the bullet. Ian went further south across the state then they thought so we were on the fringe. Moderate wind with some gusts and rain over the night. Wind seems to have died down, but it is still raining - light rain, nothing flood-worthy. No damage to our house or cars - some tree debris blown around.

Just hope it doesn't take too long to get power restored - generators are expensive to run.
