Found a more accurate map of Mauna Loa and was surprised to see that there are actually five volcanoes on  the Big Island of Hawaii. 😮

Mauna Loa's caldera sits at an altitude of  13,000 feet.

No wonder it lights up the night sky!

In fact, according to this CNN article, there are now TWO volcanoes lighting up the night sky.

And even the morning sky. :D

This link from the USGS provides updates on what is happening and what may happen later.

https://www.usgs.gov/volcanoes/mauna-loa/volcano-updates

The CO2 global monitoring observatory is on Mauna Loa and its access to its equipment may be impacted and could be shut down due to the lava flow

The Hawaii Volcano National Park is located on the southern point of the island, we have toured it a few times. Its pretty impressive.

Interesting to note, is that out of the 5 volcano’s, Mauna Loa and Kilauea are the biggest and people living by those two volcanos (zone 1 and 2) require to purchase volcano insurance. You can see a picture of zones in the link below.

Observatory site is officially closed to due power being cut off and inaccessibility to the site itself.
