Earthquakes In One Place After Another...

No sign of any let up in all this ncreased seismic activity.  Woke up this morning to find all these 5.0+ notifications on my phone...again.

This morning's shallow 6.5 was just upgraded to a near 7.0 magnitude.

 

 

And a DEEP 5.0 just hit in the Sea of Japan, NE of North Korea.

 

As Michael Janitch/Dutchsinse has repeatedly demonstrated, DEEP quakes lead to shallower, larger quakes.

 

So I don't expect to see a decrease in all of this heightened seismic activity anytime soon.

Deadly Earthquake in Haiti Affects Our Brothers

On Saturday, August 14, 2021, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck southwestern Haiti. Unfortunately, three of Jehovah’s Witnesses are confirmed to have died in the disaster. Another 21 were injured, 3 of whom are in the hospital. Their injuries are not life-threatening. We will continue to pray for our brothers to be ‘supplied with endurance and comfort’ during this difficult time.

I knew there would be a good chance of our brothers being affected by this quake, I kept waiting for word on it thru jw.org, there was nothing this morning. I hate that some died but the number was a lot lower than I was expecting (with considerable dread).

Last week's 8.0+ is responsible for most of the 5.0+ quakes that have hit so far today:

 

 

Extremely large quakes are capable of producing large quantities of extremely large aftershocks.

And the strong shaking continues.

My phone vibrates each time a 5.0+ strikes somewhere on the planet.

That is totally dependent on the degree of seismic activity.  Lots of seismic unrest leads to loads of 5.0+ notifications on my phone.

This current period of super high activity has led to 161 buzzes/vibrations/notifications showing up on my phone in just the past seven days.  The notices come from the Volcanoes and Eartquakes site.

 

Two more came in since I last posted.

 

Shockingly, 11 of those 161 notifications we're for quakes registering greater than 6.0.

It's a lot of quakes isn't it. Wonder if there's documentation of the increase in recent times.

Seems the planet is still in a major quake event mode.   Almost one 6.0+ quake per day.

 

Michael Janitch/Dutchsinse said in his last report that he has never observed this many large quakes occurring in such a relatively tight cluster before.

Personally, I believe the original 8.0+ quake, that is causing all these aftershocks, was much bigger than reported.

From the USGS final summary of the 'event' in the Sandwich Islands on August 12th, 2021...

The earthquake occurred ~3 minutes following a M7.5 foreshock that was located at a depth of ~63 km and ~90 km to the north. At the location of the M8.1 earthquake, the South America plate subducts westward beneath the Scotia plate and South Sandwich microplate (a component of the broader Scotia plate). The South America plate subducts at a rate of ~71 mm/yr relative to the South Sandwich microplate. The depth and the mechanism of this event are consistent with the earthquake rupturing within the subducted South America plate (an intraplate earthquake), rather than on the interface between the two plates. Given the temporal proximity of these two large earthquakes, however, a faulting mechanism for the M8.1 mainshock is difficult to accurately constrain due to the overlapping seismic waves.

According to the USGS, the original magnitude of the Aug. 12th mega quake was not reported correctly.  The USGS excused their initial mistake by claiming that the 7.5 pre-shock and the 8.1 mega quake occurred within 3 minutes of each other, so that threw them off.

 

The 'footprint' left by the August 12th mega quake appears, at least to me, to signify that the August 12th quake was actually much bigger than the 8.1 that the USGS finally reported.  

 

Another possibility:  The subduction methods of the tectonic plates in the South Sandwich Islands' region could also be unique, in that an 'event' there causes extremely large quantities of extremely large magnitude aftershocks.

 

*note*   I am not an earthquake expert.   I have just been observing earthquake reports since 2001, when I first got the internet and a tablet with an earthquake app.

I heard there has been an earthquake "swarm" under and around a volcano in Hawaii also - 140 in just a day or two.  Although there appears to be no lava at the top of the volcano, they think this probably means that the volcano will have an eruption soon.
