I wonder if he is just quoting an estimate made by the broadcaster and if either of them have a real number...

My understanding is it was an estimate.

Mostly based on the fact that there are some 8,000,000 of us, then adding to that our comments here on JWTalk, whereupon he reached into the hat and the number 48,000,000 came up.

Very scientific, I can live with that.
