I, for one, cannot understand how people can live in an area where earthquakes are "common" and would leave the area with the first shudder under my feet. I would pack up and find a new place to live. But, as far as I understand, people in California are "used to it" and don't pay any attention unless a quake is "high enough" on the Richter Scale.

The same holds true for those who live in a "hurricane state". Many people here in Florida do not even think about evacuating for a Cat 1 hurricane.

I want to say that old cliché, familiarity breeds contempt, but that's not really accurate. I don't think you can have contempt for an inanimate object or event.

I can understand the feeling of riding out a storm, or hurricane.  It would be a judgment call, personal to an individual..with a lot of different factors to consider.

With a storm comes a storm track. You have days of warnings and can get online and check out all the info for yourself. If I was single, had nothing to lose,  didn't care about anything,  I could see me riding one out, just for fun...

Being dedicated to Jehovah,  I don't have the choice to make.  I already gave my life to Him, do I want to risk His property by thrillseeking?..Nope.

With quakes, (pre dutch)you don't really know.  It could be a little 5.0 wriggle, or it could blast half the state into rubble. Even with Dutch and his 80% or so accuracy rating, its not like watching something coming towards you like a storm. Plus,  if you have lived in hurricane country you see them every year, maybe several times a year.  That could give some folks a bit of confidence in their own judgment and in their own capabilities.

As far as I know, no one in the congregations here was adversely affected.  I was watching the awful effect that the hurricane had on New Bern and Wilmington NC, and in Myrtle Beach here in SC, and saw news reporters wading knee deep in the water in those cities. Last death count for the three states (including Virginia) that I heard was 14, and the displaced people are numbering over 1,000,000, mostly from the coastline.

So far, locally we haven't experienced anything more than some rain.  I am thankful to Jehovah.  It is a blessing that we can go through the WT study online, listening to the recording.  I remember how we used to have the cassette tapes, and had to request them beforehand.

O brother.

Death toll from this horrible hurricane/tropical storm has reached 14.

Constant warnings are put out...

you must evacuate!

Don’t drive thru flooded streets. (As happened to cause this latest death)

Could have been 4 people instead of just one.

Wow! Seems like horrible things just keep happening.

Train crew taken to hospital with minor injuries. Thank goodness for that.

Sorry for cntinuing to share sad negative news but:

this news article says death toll has reached 17.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - With Wilmington cut off from the rest of North Carolina by still-rising floodwaters from Florence, officials plan to airlift food and water to the city of nearly 120,000 people as rescuers elsewhere pull inland residents from homes swamped by swollen rivers.

The deadly storm was still dumping rain and had top winds around 30 mph (50 kph) early Monday, but forecasters said it was expected to gradually pick up forward speed and complete a big turn toward the Northeast.

Flooding worries were increasing in West Virginia and Virginia, where power outages also were on the rise. About 500,000 homes and businesses were in the dark.

The spreading disaster claimed additional lives Sunday, with at least 17 people confirmed dead, and the nation's top emergency official said other states were in the path this week.

"Not only are you going to see more impact across North Carolina ... but we're also anticipating you are about to see a lot of damage going through West Virginia, all the way up to Ohio as the system exits out," Brock Long of the Federal Emergency Management Agency said Sunday on Fox News.

Authorities near Charlotte were searching for a 1-year-old boy who was swept away by floodwaters when the boy's mother lost her grip on him after her vehicle was swept off a road.

In Wilmington , the state's eighth-largest city, residents waited for hours outside stores and restaurants for basic necessities like water. Police guarded the door of one store, and only 10 people were allowed inside at a time.

County commission chairman Woody White said officials were planning for food and water to be flown into the coastal city.

"Our roads are flooded," he said. "There is no access to Wilmington."

About 70 miles (115 kilometers) away from the coast, residents near the Lumber River stepped from their homes directly into boats floating in their front yards; river forecasts showed the scene could be repeated in towns as far as 250 miles inland as waters rise for days.

In Anson County, east of Charlotte, a train derailed on Sunday evening, but it wasn't clear whether it was storm-related or if anyone was injured. Several cars of a CSX train left the tracks, WBTV reported.

The derailment led to at least one road closure. Officials have reported flooding caused by Tropical Storm Florence in Union County, located between Charlotte and Anson County.

Florence was still massive, despite being downgraded to a tropical depression from a once-fearsome Category 4 hurricane. Radar showed parts of the sprawling storm over six states, with North and South Carolina in the bull's-eye.

Meanwhile, halfway around the world, Typhoon Mangkhut barreled into southern China on Sunday after lashing the Philippines with strong winds and heavy rain that left dozens dead. More than 2.4 million people were evacuated from China's southern Guangdong province ahead of the massive typhoon, the strongest to hit the region in nearly two decades.

In North Carolina, fears of what could be the worst flooding in the state's history led officials to order tens of thousands to evacuate, though it wasn't clear how many had fled or even could.

President Donald Trump said federal emergency workers, first responders and law enforcement officials were "working really hard." As the storm "begins to finally recede, they will kick into an even higher gear."

"Very Professional!" he declared in a tweet.

The storm's death toll climbed to 17 as authorities said a 3-month-old child was killed when a tree fell on a mobile home in North Carolina. Three people died in weather-related traffic accidents, officials said.

Reminds me of the tower in Siloam that fell killing 18 people. Luke 13:4-5   An article about making Jehovah your confidence referenced that example that Jesus gave, because he asked if those 18 were more guilty than any other man in Jerusalem?  He said, No, I tell you, but unless you repent you will be destroyed in that same way.  The article made the point that just because someone suffers from a natural disaster, that it should not be concluded that God is causing this kind of suffering.    A timely reminder for us in the affected US states.

It came to mind because I read that they are saying that they found the apparently related Pool of Siloam where the man born blind was cured.

That's interesting.

O bother! I’m just full of good news here.

Looks like at the nuclear plant they are running a “hot shutdown”. No workers are allowed in the area.

An Emergency has been declared.

What more is this hurricane going to bring on these poor people.

NPR radio is reporting over a thousand roads closed in the Carolinas

due to flooding from Florence.  Looks like boats and helicopters will be

the main mode of transportation for awhile.:(

I'm not really sure how backing in will keep anyone from stealing gas from my truck  :shrugs:  the gas tank access is halfway down the driver side of the truck and can be reached just as easy if I pull in or back in
