Long Covid, also called post-Covid syndrome, is shaping up to be a major, long-term public health issue. In the UK alone, almost 700,000 people reported having symptoms for at least three months after getting infected with Covid-19, according to a survey done by the UK Office for National Statistics in March. A majority of the 700,000 said their illness was limiting their day-to-day activities and for almost 70,000, the symptoms have lasted for more than a year.

Good that you recovered! 🌺

My good friend has been suffering with post-COVID symptoms now since January. But hopefully she will also fully recover and the effects won’t be permanent.

not permanent... but it can last 12 months before getting back to normal

Ooh dear! I've read about people losing their breath and losing energy, losing hair, having a metal aftertaste as well. Hopefully the symptoms will alleviate soon!

The problem is ... no one knows how long "long" is with long Covid - since each month that goes by can add another month to the symptoms and recovery time.

It rarely surpasses 12 months. Average 6 months :)

There are "rarely" deadly side effects of the vaccine(s) but those rare times make the news.

Since C-19 is new and still current - it is really too early to say it rarely surpasses 12 months since there are still people with active cases who have not yet surpassed 12 months to see if all the effects are gone.

We're barely past 12 months for this entire pandemic

There are many cases over 12 months. Thousands. Many humans got this way back in 2019/20

Dont forget the 2003 SARS CoV 1 patients. They serve as model for this too.

I believe in my studies/research those rare cases if in fact had got the SARS COV 2 could ended up dead as well. Same pathogeny mechanism: The interaction of the person´s unique imune system and the virus.

The more "like" the spike protein is the vaccine, the more it can mimic the covid it self.

Vaccines more different from the real spike protein, or with only segment of it are less prone to cause damage

https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/jth.14869

These are early articles from around April to July 2020 showing that quite a high number of severe covid cases in ICU went on to have blood clots resulting in strokes, pulmonary embolisms, or heart attacks.  It was noted that "However, higher rates of strokes in patients with COVID-19 is somewhat unusual because it also seems to be happening in people under 50 years of age, with no other risk factors for stroke."

And this is why the AstraZeneca vaccine is also showing the blot clotting rare side effect in younger people due to the "Same pathogeny mechanism" as Sofia said in her post above.

This may have some relevance to long haulers.  Covid as a disease does a lot more damage to our bodies than a flu.  And so the effects will linger longer.  It affects our oxygen supply, so that will leave our bodies vulnerable for a long time - "COVID-19 also appears to be associated with blood clots in the tiny blood vessels that are important for the transfer of oxygen in organs."

"Another potential explanation is that the virus is directly impacting on the cells lining our blood vessels. When the body fights an infection, the immune system becomes activated to try and kill the invader, and research shows an activated immune system can cause blood clots.

In severe COVID-19, the immune system appears to go into overdrive. This could lead to the unchecked activation of cells that typically stop blood clotting.

Another possibility is that the virus triggers blood clotting to provide it with a survival advantage.

The SARS virus, another member of the coronavirus family, can be further “activated” by a blood clotting protein, enabling the virus to more efficiently invade cells."

The more I read about the disease, the more it freaks me out.  Though rare for the young to have a serious case, it really causes havoc with our immune system, with even milder cases having lingering effects for a long time.

Yes I saw this affecting one man in his 40’s interviewed on the news who was quite healthy pre-corona virus. He used to go running before, too.

On our local news they profiled some college students (including some athletes) [I live where there is a major US university] who, by all reports, had excellent health before falling victim to C-19. All interviewed had all been infected more than 12 months ago. Although some seemed to be "fully recovered" about half of them complained that they still had lingering effect of tiredness and heavy breathing when they do physical exertion that they used to be able to do "without breaking a sweat".

So, while I have not personally studied C-19 - I think it is a bit early to say categorically that long-covid does not last (or seldom lasts) more than 12 months. If young healthy people in peak physical condition (like the athletes) are still feeling the effects more than 12 months later - those with less than optimal health may have symptoms and effects that they are still dealing with but have not been documented because they are not in a "study" for someone to record their lingering effects.

Some hopeful news for long-haulers:

Vaccines offer hope of healing to COVID long-haulers

A little over 23 per cent of the 44 patients who received a vaccine experienced some resolution of symptoms. Only 15 per cent of the unvaccinated group were able to report a similar outcome. The results were the same for both the Pfizer-BioNTech and the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccines.

interesting and scary

it explains why so many test pcr positive without symptoms for months

the real consequences are still unknown

Today I spoke with a brother who is a very good friend of mine (Joe). He is a Firefighter/Medic and he told me about a co-worker who went on a emergency call to a Retirement home. The next day Joe went on calls together with this co-worker, and then days later this co-worker was getting sick and tested positive for Covid-19. Joe became infected from working together with that co-worker! They were able to trace back how he got infected, it was from that Retirement home. When did all this happen?

Back in January! And Joe has not been able to go back to work since January! Joe’s doctor told him that he is in the “Long Haulers” club which at the time Joe knew nothing about. Since January, Joe has been tested multiple times and each result has been “Negative”, but he still has many of the symptoms, shortness of breath, tired, cough, etc. :(

So what I am wondering, maybe someone knows the answer to this, if a person continues to test “Negative” but still has a variety of symptoms for many months, then what is left remaining in the person’s body that is producing these symptoms which keeps the  person sick for so long? Is the virus integrating with the DNA of these  “Long Haulers” and that is why the symptoms continue on for months? Or some other reason? :shrugs:

So far what scientist know is yes for both questions.

The virus it self goes away after a few days. But he REACTIVATES any latent infection you have.

Some brothers in Africa are experiencing malaria symptoms.... after vaccination or covid.

In the western world we usualy have herpes ( dorment after chicken pox infection) or epstein-barr / Citomegalovirus ( dorment after mononucleosis).

That awakening develops some of the long hauler´s symtoms.

Mine lasted 12 months, in some last less, other last longer.

But it will go away.

30% of long haulers who took vaccine aftwards, saw a big improvement. others stood the same.

Hi Sofia,

Thank you for your help. >:D<

I know that I am not the only one who is grateful you joined us here on JWtalk, we very much appreciate you sharing your experience and knowledge in this field.

So after the virus goes away but it reactivated any latent infections, where do those older latent infections come from?

How are they able to “hide” from our immune system destroying it?

I know that after a person get chicken pox, the virus that causes it, hides in the body.

Daydream -

Scientists have discovered that daydreaming is an important tool for creativity. It causes a rush of activity in a circuit, which connects different parts of the brain and allows the mind to make new associations.

From your nerves

the immune system can’t reach them in there
