La Palma volcano update: Increasing explosive activity, powerful shock waves

Fri, 24 Sep 2021, 15:05

Explosions have increased during the past hours, often generating shock powerful waves that can break glass in up to 3 km distance.

A new effusive vent has been reported to have opened on the flank of the main cone.

No wonder more areas are being evacuated. I wouldn't want to have to try breathing in that. :(

The government recommends to stay indoors with doors and windows closed, and use a face mask when outdoors. I guess some idiots will say it's their right not to use one and no one can force them. Please yourself!

“Nobody’s telling me I have to wear a mask outside.” Yeah, it’s their right to breathe in that stuff. 😶🌫️

I just watched BBC news and the interview of a vocanologist who said the present activity is strengthening and about the Flanc fissure, there is no way of knowing or predicting the outcome of this..something like that..It seemed as if he was anxious, but didn't want to express more..Did anyone see his report?

When I checked the LIVE feeds this morning, the eruption had halted.

It has now begun its explosive eruptions again.

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/authorities-lockdown-coastal-area-la-palma-lava-approaches-sea-2021-09-27/

LA PALMA, Spain, Sept 27 (Reuters) - A volcano on Spain's La Palma island began ejecting lava again on Monday after a lull, while hundreds of people in coastal villages hunkered down in anticipation of lava emitted in previous days reaching the sea and releasing toxic gas.

Spurts of vivid lava emerged from the Cumbre Vieja volcano in the early evening and snaked down the dark mountainside after a period of several hours without explosions, according to Reuters witnesses.

The hiatus and new explosions came eight days after lava started pouring from the mountain range on the island, which neighbours Tenerife in the Canary Islands archipelago off North Africa.

"Activating and deactivating is logical, natural in the evolution of Strombolian volcanoes," said Miguel Angel Morcuende, director of the Pevolca response committee, referring to the type of violent eruption that emits incandescent dust.

Lava continues to flow into the Atlantic and new vents continue to form.

With the eruption approaching two weeks of activity, there is no sign of it ending anytime soon.

Instead, the magma supply rate seems to be more or less stable, judging from visible lava output and volcanic tremor, which remains at high levels.

The cone complex above the original eruptive fissure is showing signs of becoming more and more unstable, as several new effusive vents have been opening up during the past 12 hours or so.

Wow! One report also said that the volcano released 16,000 tons of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. This gas, combined with a cloud of dust from the Sahara Desert, reached as far as Puerto Rico, the Caribbean Astronomy Society reported. Experts have predicted that the eruption could go on for weeks or even months.

I wonder what this new earthquake will mean! I can't imagine residents getting a peaceful night's sleep with what is happening!😐

There have already been sixteen 3.0+ quakes recorded today at the volcano and the explosive force of the eruption is intensifying.

During the past hours, the eruption has been becoming stronger, with pressure increasing in the main cone, our correspondent Victor from the Canarian volcanological society Volcanes de Canarias reported.

Strong ground vibrations from sustained, near-constant explosions can be felt in nearby areas, such as shown in the video taken at 9.17 a.m. local time from Tacande, at 3 km distance, taken a short time ago:

I would have to leave La Palma because I could never stand having to hear that constant ROA-OAR

and this seismic activity report on the Volcano Discovery website:

Seismic activity shows worrying signs

According to a post of a geoscience page

 https://www.facebook.com/VolcanesyCienciaHoy/

on facebook based in Tenerife, the current seismic activity points towards that more magma is moving upwards, as indicated by 3 factors:
- several earthquakes appeared at depths less than 7-8-9 km;
- after the 4.2 quake two days ago, there have been episodes of spasmodic tremor with many earthquakes in a row that indicate movement of magma in depth;
- since yesterday, the appearance of strong volcanic tremor at around 18 Hz frequency thought to be caused by depressurization of fluids at great depth around 10 km.

If these interpretations hold, there should soon be noticeable ground uplift visible in the GPS stations (which, so far, is not the case).

What will next happen, when this new magma pulse reaches the surface, is unknown.

In the best scenario, the current conduits will continue to cope with it and the magma will erupt from the existing vents.

In the worst scenario, magma could open new fissures in a different area, even after another potential pause of the eruption should it occur.

In a scenario in between, new fissures might open near the existing vents, and new lava would erupt onto existing lava fields.

No one can predict the future, but for sure the evolution of the eruption will be a highly interesting one and the experience intense for everyone involved.

At least the ROA-OAR has lessened a little.

Quote

Today, the eruption continues with steady lava fountaining from the lower vent and strong degassing and ash emission from the upper vents, but is much less noisy compared to yesterday, to the relief of people living in the area many of whom were terrorized by the extreme noise of the eruption in recent days.

The decrease of sound intensity is however not an indication of what state the eruption is in its deeper underground.

It is mostly reflecting how gasses can escape and interact with the ambient air at the very surface.

Amazing being able to watch it live. And it's day 24 already. Imagine what would happen at the climax when the volcano finally blows off its top. Scary stuff for those who are within sight of this monstrous inferno.

We had an update at the meeting last night regarding the friends at La Palma. 17 brothers and sisters have been evacuated and are staying with relatives or with other witnesses. Nobody (either JWs or non-JWs) has been hurt so far. The branch has organized a special meeting with the three congregations in the island to comfort and encourage the friends, although they are staying spiritually strong.

Nobody has been hurt so far by this eruption, since the lava flow is very slow and people have time to flee with days in advance. Yet recently a drone detected some idiot left and abandoned his dogs. The poor animals are surrounded by lava, without water or food for many days. It's impossible to get to the area either by car or by helicopter due to the volcanic ashes. So two companies are using drones to bring them food and water.

They say when the dogs were discovered a few days ago they could hardly walk. Now they run like crazy when they hear the drones. :)

Tomorrow they will try to rescue them. The plan is to use some traps to lure them into a net, one by one, then take them using two drones. The whole country is now on edge with on that rescue. I hope everything goes well.

Dutch was right about the earthquake magnitudes increasing.

The strongest-so-far quake, a magnitude 4.8 event at 39 km depth, occurred at 10.48 p.m. on Tuesday evening under the island.

Whether it is an indication of another pulse magma going to fuel the eruption remains to be seen, but a possible scenario, in which case activity should be picking up even more in the near future.

Volcanic tremor remains high; it has even increased a bit compared to yesterday, suggesting that magma output rates are still very elevated.

Earthquake activity remains high, and with the addition of the recent 4.9 quake, slowly increases in both numbers and maximum magnitudes.

Ground deformation has increased again slightly: the deflationary trend of the past day stopped and turned again to inflation.
