I have heard of this "video wall." Can someone explain what it is? (I don't work in Hollywood.)

It's the new "green screen'. So actors work in front of it, and the software (called 'unreal engine') will move the background to match the camera angle.
It's super fancy and reasonably new.

Covid forced studios to do everything in the studio, so this latest technology is result of a lot of work. It is very fancy.

So you be anywhere and at anytime, by just changing the software program.

Do you think they'll release bloopers ? 😆

Probably. But, none will be from Jesus, obviously. 🙃

You are not entirely incorrect Wes.  The 'video  wall' is assembled from individual displays (like LED monitors).  They can be flat or curved or even with tops or ceilings.  They surround the physical stage and display scenes or backgrounds or situations for the actors to work in front of.

They are the current replacement for 'green-screens'.  The older green screen did not display anything.  After the scene was shot, computer graphics engineers pasted the scene around them.  But the actors never really worked in the background environment.  It was put in later.

Note the video walls display the scene at the same time the actor is working in front of it.  Here are a couple of comments from industry magazines.  The first one is BP Photo which is a Watchtower supplier.

LED Volume Walls

An LED volume wall is a system of linked high-end LED panels used to display video footage or 3D content to form a background behind your actors. In essence, it’s like shooting live action in front of a highly sophisticated, extremely large television screen. Used for productions ranging from streaming series to weekly episodic shows to sci-fi blockbusters, LED volume walls can consist of a mobile setup or a more permanent system (volume stage). Providers such as Orbital Virtual Studios can supply background content, production setup, and project management for your Virtual Production capture.

Immersive Environments

LED volume walls make it easier for actors to maintain their concentration by surrounding your talent with the environment in which the action takes place. Long shoot days in front of a green screen will send most actors running for the hills, but with a volume wall, they get the next best thing to being there.

Are we to witness the end of the green-screen era? A silent revolution is taking place on film and TV sets, virtual production is enabling productions to create immersive and dynamic sets and backgrounds, based on simple LED panels instead of elaborate and costly set designs.

LED panels prove to be the ideal solution and canvas to portray sets and backgrounds created in virtual reality. Thereby creating maximum flexibility for the production teams to make last-minute set changes or slight alterations and comforting actors in a setting that is both real and immersive, enhancing their performance in comparison to performing against a green screen.
