Anybody from around Borrego Springs, California  feel the 5.2 this morning?

 

There have been three 6.0 + quakes in just the past 24 hours.

6.2 in the Solomon Islands

6.1 in Nicaragua

and a 6.2 in Indonesia

 

The 'big ones' seem to happen in streaks.

The Borrego Springs earthquake woke us up this morning. It was a good jolt and we're about 50 miles from the epicenter. It was hard to get back to sleep after.

According to Wiki, from the year 455 to 2016, there have only been 41 earthquakes recorded in Romania.

I'm thinking that makes them pretty rare there.

 

Now there have been 2 in just this past year.

This one and another 5.6 back in September.

Series of earthquakes hits near California-Nevada border

 

A series of moderate earthquakes rocked the Nevada-California border, shaking residents in both states but producing no reports of major damage or injury.

 

The first temblor, with a magnitude of 5.7, occurred at 12:22 a.m. PST near Hawthorne, Nev. It was followed by a second 5.7 quake and then more than 100 aftershocks.

Yellowstone's geysers have been REALLY percolating for the past few days, now.  I hope that doesn't signify that molten rock is getting closer to the surface.

 

They sure have been a whole lot more active--and spectacular to watch--at any rate.

A few days ago, I posted here that Old Faithful was erupting almost continuously.  

I don't know what happened to that post, but I may have found out why the geyser was doing that.  

There was a swarm of earthquakes happening in Yellowstone.

I believe this swarm of earthquakes may be why the other geysers are now so active, too.

I did some research on Yellowstone.

The molten rock is over 4 miles down. 

 

When the supervolcano's caldera rises and falls, it is NOT magma that is causing it,

but thermodynamics with the water pressure beneath the surface.  

 

If it were magma causing the lifting, the ground would not lower back down.

 

The reason the geysers are more active during an earthquake swarm (of which Yellowstone

experiences hundreds per year) is because the water that erupts from the geysers

is so extremely hot, it dissolves minerals and carries them to the surface.  These minerals

cool and re-solidify and end up plugging the geysers' vents.  

 

The earthquakes bust these plugs loose, like a plumber's snake unclogs your stopped up pipes,

and the geysers can erupt more forcefully.

 

Mystery solved.
