Is this because of bots or real people?

Both, however, it is real people who set up the bots

300K on Instagram! and 49K on TikTok!

I'm not familiar with social media, how does a lot of followers affect the account? Does it make more popular so more people will see it?

Here in my congregation, an announcement was made about not posting only links from the JW website on social media. If anyone has posted anything from the site, please remove it. In a separate announcement, we were asked not to follow the organization's official social media accounts. Anyone wanting more information should go to the JW website.
Mod edit : please disregard some wires got crossed

Yes, it can help quite a bit.

  • The more followers an account has, the more people are likely to see its posts when new content is published.
  • Social media platforms often use signals such as followers, likes, shares, saves, and watch time to decide how widely to show content. Strong engagement can help posts reach people who do not already follow the account.
  • A larger follower base can help information spread faster because more people are seeing and sharing the content.
  • High follower counts can also increase awareness. People are more likely to discover the account through recommendations, searches, and content shared by others.
  • For an account like JW Pressroom, this can help official information reach more journalists, government officials, academics, and members of the public.

So while follower count is not the only factor, it can have a significant impact on how many people see the information and how far it reaches.

Forgive me, brothers, it was my fault. I asked the brother who made the announcement if he had said not to follow the official account, and he replied that he hadn't said that. He even follows it himself and found it quite interesting. It was my mistake. I've already apologized to him, and I apologize to you all.

The first 3 posts to our social media’s were essentially links to JW.org pages, but the post today takes you to https://spectator.com/article/ukraines-jehovahs-witnesses-are-refusing-to-go-to-war/

perhaps we’ll be linking out to JW stuff in other news outlets more than we ever used to (which was very rarely)
