I have a collection of sports cards and music CDs.

I thought this topic might be fun!

A chance to have some enjoyable discussions and walk down "memory lane" about various things we have collected over the years!

I am not a collector as such.

 

However, I do have a Buescher alto saxophone I bought in the mid early 1970's. I even got to play it in the orchestra when we had one. Of course, it dates back before I had it since the guy I bought it from had it since he was a child and he was selling it because he was graduating from the University.

 

I also have a 12-string Hofner guitar I got in 1972 and a 6-string Silvertone (sold by Sears) from 1962.

 

Other than that, I do have several wood bowls and boxes of various sizes, shapes and woods. I have these because I turn them myself.

I like to collect bookmarks and post cards. I also have a small collection of fridge magnets. I use some of my bookmarks, but only certain ones that I have picked up. As far as my postcards, I have quite a few as my sister and her hubby travel a couple of times a year, and my niece and her hubby travel more often, so they both will bring me something from wherever. I can't think of any favorites now, but that has made me want to go thru them all and look at them ..Maybe I can name some later.

Back in my childhood, I grew up in the mountains. We had so many different birds that I had my own little "bird feather collection." 😄 Whenever I found a feather on the ground I take it and stick it inside a book and write the bird's name. I ask elders if I don't know the bird's name..

But my weirdest hobby? Proverbs! 🤣

Whenever someone especially aged people said a Malayalam proverb I'd instantly remember both the proverb and its meaning. Later, I'd sit down and neatly write it in my notebook. Funny ones, wise ones, sarcastic ones—I wanted them all!

My grandma was the ultimate proverb encyclopedia. ❤️ She knew so many, and I learned a lot from her. Before I knew it, I had a whole notebook filled with proverbs that many people don't even know today. Sadly... when we shifted houses, those precious books disappeared, also my hobbies...

I never thought about collecting Bookmarks.

I love birds!! 

So finding different feathers of various colors would be fun to collect

I collected The Bee Gees' music--in all forms, MP3's, albums, 45's, CDs, cassette tapes and even some 8-tracks.

 

I say "collected", past tense, because there is nothing--within my budget--left to collect.  🤭

 

I must say, having all those various forms of an artists' music is not the fun part.  The fun was in the hunt, the collecting.😁👍👍

 

Visiting used record shops, scouring the used record sales at the local malls, searching the listings on e-Bay...and then the thrill of actually finding a new item to add to your growing collection.💃💃💃💃💃😂

 

Yup.  The thrill was in the hunting and finally finding.  Not the actual having.

 

So now... I'm hunting, er, collecting owls.🤭

 

When we retired from farming a few years ago, we kept a piece of river property.

 

We purchased a 20 year old destination camper and placed it on the property...and now I'm filling it, inside and out, with... owls. 

 

And I'm having a fun time doing it.😁👍👍

 

When I was younger, I had an impressive rock collection, and a collection of model horses.  It was virtually impossible to keep glass and ceramic horses cuz my cats kept knocking them off the shelves.😩🙈😂🤣😂🤣

Yup.  The thrill was in the hunting and finally finding.  

 

That is how I feel.

Throughout history people have enjoyed thrill of the "chase", the "seeking of gold", "archaeological digs finding items of historical significance", etc.

 

But even today on a small scale, when finding something we enjoy collecting, it may not be gold, but whether it is a music CD or an old record, or the colorful feather of bird, or a well-designed bookmark, it is the "chase" and the "find" that can be very fun! 

 

(BTW - I have always liked the Bee Gees!  )

I have never been much of a collector.  I don't like to throw things away though.

 

I had a coin collection with holders for quarters, nickels, dimes, pennies, etc.  I haven't done anything with them in over 2 decades.  I would have to hunt for them now.  I really don't know where they are.

 

I used to have a collection of books, but unfortunately, I did away with them.  I had bound volumes going back to the 50's, but when I moved it was easier to give them away, especially since everything is online now.  I also had a large collection of books on health and building, but they were finally done away with. I used to think that every home should have a library with shelves of books, but you can keep everything on a tablet today.

 

I bought Star Trek videotapes for my son which he asked for but then never watched.  I may have several of them packed up somewhere.  I have music CDs and movies and TV shows on DVD from long ago.  Most of those movies and TV shows are available on free streaming services today.

 

One thing I hate about this world is the amount of waste.  There was a time when condiments were in glass jars, but now they are in plastic.  Milk used to come in glass jars that could be recycled but it now comes in plastic.  People used to drink water from a tap, but someone decided to start selling water in plastic bottles and got rich from it.  I need to stop now before I get into the damage that is being done by out throwaway economy.

I started collecting coins & cards & a few comics as a kid.  And just recently started up my collecting habits again.    It hits differently as an adult with money though...

 

I started collecting comics again first, until I filled up 6 boxes worth.  And started realizing how tedious it is to ensure there isn't anything improper in all the comics I was buying.  It's so easy to mix in magic & spiritism these days, it's a constant battle to be on guard against it.  And then...I began to realize how repetitive the stories are.  Bad guys cause trouble, good guy rises up and defeats them.  If they can't, they get help/stronger then they beat them.  Rinse & repeat.  So...that got boring.  And when you have funds to buy whatever you want...there's no thrill of "finally getting that next issue" or whatever.  So....that idea died pretty fast.  

 

I then began collecting coins again.  So many.  And again, the realization just recently hit me that there's no end in sight.  Just about every style you can imagine is available out there.  Like penguins?  Here's a penguin coin!  Like lions?  Here's a lion coin!  Etc. etc.  Oh and here's a copper version.  And a silver version.  And a gold version!  BUT WAIT...THERE'S MORE!!  Then we have the 1 oz version.  The 5 oz version.  The 10 oz version.  Then the MIGHTY POUND version!  Oh and here's a colorized version.  And just to make it weird....a triangle version!!  No...end...in....sight.  So...I'm getting tired of this hobby...and room to store them all.  

 

I haven't gotten back into collecting cards.....though I have to admit I snagged a few Star Trek card packs for about $2/pack at a recent auction.  Couldn't resist.  But I'm not about to get full-on into card collecting again.  I'm learning!!  

 

My favorite collectables are the coins, because at least they have value, even if it is just the value a refiner would put on them to melt them down...

 

My favorite item is a 3D printed coaster, signed by William Shatner.  It's my favorite, because it's the only 1 in existence like it.

I bought a 16 TB & a 22 TB hard drives for similar reasons, though most of my collection is in ".iso" format (DVDs).  Would be cooler if I had everything as .mp4s or similar so then I could put it all into JellyFin and host my own streaming server.  🤔  Maybe one day I'll have an AI agent smart enough to extract the videos from each .iso and set that all up for me.  😁
