Why am I posting this in secular news, you may wonder? Well, remember last year Google Maps had to publish an entire article to explain the three different Gulf of Mexico labels displayed to users depending on where they are from…

On the other hand, think about Paradise... what will Jehovah do with geography? How will we name places and things?
It's exciting to think about.

Somebody in a news story said that after Lake Ontario being renamed, then he should rename another lake to Lake Epstein.

Thats why I like the openstreetmap way of storing this kind of data.

An object has a number or identifier and a name (which stays the same) but for every language there is a field how its called by others. So in dutch Golf of Mexico its still the same.

 

Language isnt the same as country so there even is a official_name for each country possible.

 

So if certain types prefer the naming by US gov they can create maps showing it, while the rest of the world continues using theirs.

What I don’t get is why they don’t use the current US name on the US border side and the names Canada/Mexico uses on their border areas.
The fact that google and apple will only name the whole body of water per trumps order is ridiculous. They have To be getting something out of it.

Nowhere else in the world is anyone going to call them the new names. Honestly I grew up on the Gulf and it will always be Mexico for me.
