"Paper is not dead!"

Recommended Posts

Well, electronic documents are now actually a reality, so much so that I will be out of work soon - no more filing clerks!

But, I have to agree, can't get rid of loo paper quite yet :)

Its funny they used to think that offices would be paperless by now. No way. They cannot get rid of signed legal documents. Which in effect is every document on the planet that has a wet signature. Or in laymen terms an ink signature. So in fact there is more paper and file clerks than ever before because of technology. It is a very broad misconception that Tech can replace paper.

Now after all that it is a funny video.

Oh, I wish that were true, Greg!  I work in that field and they are indeed getting rid of filing clerks, because now we scan documents and copies are accepted as legal for court purposes.  Government departments need to be able to assure that they are indeed collecting, storing and producing documents that were scanned accurately and according to procedures.  But after that, it's ok for electronic docs to be used for legal purposes.

For more info, here are the "dry" details from National Archives Australia, the peak authority in Australia.  I assume this may be the norm now in other countries too.

"In relation to documentary evidence, the Commonwealth Evidence Act:

  • abolishes the original document rule (also referred to as the 'best evidence rule'), replacing it with simple means of giving evidence of the contents of documents, including documents held in electronic and other non-paper forms;

  • includes a narrower hearsay rule and wider exceptions to that rule, providing for greater admissibility of hearsay evidence;

  • includes provisions for easier proof of, and presumptions about, business and official records, and documents recording an electronic communication; and

  • includes pre-trial procedures enabling litigants to test the weight of documentary evidence that might be given in proceedings.

With a greater range of evidence admissible in many Australian courts, agencies must consider the quality of evidence available in a legal proceeding and whether that evidence is likely to persuade a court to accept the Commonwealth's version of the facts."  http://www.naa.gov.au/records-management/strategic-information/standards/records-in-evidence/evidence-law-australia.aspx

(How awful to introduce work stuff here in this spiritual cyberplace! Apologies brothers and sisters! :blushing: )

Yep, had to google that one. Thought is really something some people did.. like in france? But then realized it was just in a movie as I read a bit more.  I'll stick to paper for some use cases.  But i have to agree I am mostly digital in every area of life now.  My writing skills always were atrocious as compared to just typing it.  Or now just Swyping it for tablets and phones.

 Personal Greetings from Paul and Kathy Forgive me if I got long winded, there is just so much to share.

Even signed documents can be paperless. In a recent real estate sale my wife and I only saw digital documents, used digital signature to complete the sale.

Signed a loan contract last week totally digital including the signatures.

A big use of paper comes from making too many copies of everything.

Our KH copy machines (2) for three congregations go through about 15 reams of paper each year, that is 3750 pages. Average 61 pages a day.(?)

Don't ask me how much Loo paper we go through each year (Maybe too many copies?   :lol: )

 I am not sying I am Superman, I am only saying that nobody has ever seen Superman  and me in a room together.

I will always love paper. I like the tactile experience. And while I am happy to make use of all the technological advancements some of my fondest memories include the sound of my highlighter running across the Watchtower or ripping open that brown wrapper to reveal a brand new copy of the Awake!

I'm in the copier / printer business. The number of prints our customers do is still climbing. Unfortunatly much of the printing is temporary in nature. For example, 20 people have a meeting. Each one is given several multi page handouts. On leaving, most goes in the bin.

Paper will never be dead as long as there are people like me around - I just love books, and spend hours looking through second hand bookshops and the like.   Today I came across the book 'Equipped for Every Good Work' in a local junk shop (and believe it or not a sister works there - she totally missed it !!) and not that long ago whilst on holiday I found one of the Studies in the Scriptures books, 'The Atonement between God and Man' in a used bookshop.  Nothing beats tucking up comfortably on a chair with a book and a cup of coffee.
