Handy to have. I once asked a brother to find me a metric adjustable wrench. He was gone for awhile...😳

My brother whilst he was an auto-electrican apprentice was asked by one of the other tradesman where he had worked to go to an autoparts store across the street to get a small bag of grinding sparks for the angle grinder, as they were out. My brother went to the store and passed the order onto the owner of the store. He told my brother that he'll have to go out the back to get some, and it may take about 10 to 15 minutes, as he has to prepare some. The store owner then went out the back, got in his car drove across town to a dollar store, purchased some packets of sparklers, went back to his store out the back, then broke the sparklers to separate the oxidise chemicals off the wire that they were attached to, pounded them down further so they were more of a powder, then put them into a small zip lock bag and went to the front counter and then presented them to my brother. He said that there will be no charge on their account and told my brother not to put is close to any flames. My brother went back to the workshop with the grinding sparks and presented them to the tradesman. The tradesman was so shocked that my brother came back with this little package and that only that store owner could only come up with that.

When I was in my mid-teens, I started working in a joinery/frame/truss shop, and one of the tradesman thought it would be funny to send me down to the joinery section to ask a specific trademan (that he personally didn't like) to ask them for a long weight. I immediately told the tradesman that they didn't have any long weights on hand. The tradesman got a bit agro at my reply and told me again to go a get a long weight down at the joinery section. I just replied back, "I know that they don't have any long weights, as they didn't make outdoor windows and I have not seen any in the store room either." Then one of the other tradesman just started laughing out loud. The tradesman who asked for the long weight looked at him and said "What's so funny?" The tradesman replied, "The kid is right on two accounts. Firstly, my guess he knew the prank. But he had outsmarted you, because secondly, he knows they use tension springs on their windows, not the counter-weights that they use for sash windows, which are at times call "long weights" because of their long length."

Below are what the long weights look like.

Years ago, when I worked in a grocery store, the stock guys had to help clean the floor at night - they used to like to send a new guy for a "squeegee sharpener".

Where my brother worked, they used to tell the new guys to move the safe and clean under it - the safe was bolted to the floor. They also used to send guys to get the "incinerator wax" when they were told to clean the incinerator.

At the refinery we use to send new operators to get steam samples and then send them back because it was water instead of steam.🤣

When I did some work experience in a kitchen joinery shop which was owned by two fleshly brothers (worldly) as part of my high schooling. At the time, depending on the school and what year of schooling you were in, it can a week or two working in a pre-arranged workplace of your choice. At the time for myself, the school I attended in Year 10 we had two weeks for work experience, and these 2 weeks corresponded the last two weeks of the term (semester) before the Easter holiday 2 week holidays.

There was an 3 year apprentice working at this place, and he was put out because of me at the time, as he thought I would be doing edge banding for the 2 weeks of which he can get out of (it is the most boring brain dead job within this workshop). But that only lasted 2 days for me doing edge banding, which then I started moving through the other areas of the shop gaining experience, then starting with the in-shop assembly of the cupboards the drawers and fittings, making the benchtops, cutting out the cupboard panels and drawers, the hole drilling for the adjustable shelving, and then finally the on-site installation of the kitchen itself. Most work experience kids would be lucky to get to do anything after the in-shop assembly, as the skills required for you use the bigger machines which had the higher risk of injury (which most schools wouldn't allow their student use), or they may only watch or possibly pass them tools/screws or assist with lifting. But the owners of the joinery could see that I could handle the other jobs comfortably, they checked with my assigned teacher that I had, which was my wood-tech teacher, who also knew the business partners as they were former students of his, and he said that I was more than capable if they felt I could use their gear.

On the last week I was there for work experience, the 3rd apprentice the thought he play the a prank on me, so he asked me to clean out inside the dust collector from the saw dust that builds up. However, I knew that the collector had a safety switch located at the rear at the bottom of the machine, so I put my foot on it (which isolates the power supply to the extractor fan motor elsewhere in the shop) and knocked around the inside of the machine to loosen the caked on dust. I can hear the 3rd year apprentice turning the power switch back and forth on the fan extractor, but the motor didn't turn on for him, hoping for me to get blasted with the saw dust still in the system. He was bit dumbfounded and was at a loss why the fan didn't turn on. When I finished doing my thing, still my foot on the isolating switch, the one of the business partners said to the 3rd year apprentice to make sure that I cleaned it out properly. The other business partner mouthed out to me that the fan extractor switch was actually in the off position, so I took my foot of the isolating switch when the apprentice was nearing me without him seeing that switch himself. When the apprentice was within the dust collector, the first partner turn the extractor fan on and he copped the blast of saw dust instead. He came out covered in head-to-toe in sawdust, but he knew he was beat if he tried to do a prank on me.

You could have imagined this 3rd year apprentice eyes when I showed up the next Monday (which was the school holidays) at the workshop, as he thought my work experience period was over, however, the business owners asked me if I could work during the holiday period, as they had a heap of work at the time. The 3rd year guy was eventually okay about it and we got along after that, and I showed him the isolating switch on the collector, so he didn't get caught out with their pranks.

Normally, whilst on work experience, students were generally not allowed to get paid, but some employers may give you a gift and usually a reference for your resume. But I was actually paid for all 4 weeks (2 weeeks work experience and 2 week during the school holidays) and also given a reference. After I had left school, I ended up working for about a year with carpenter who were the business partner's previous employer, where they started and finished their apprenticeship time with.

A sister fell and broke her wrist. Her husband and daughter are out of town so we are at the emergency room with her. It's right next to beautiful Lake Sacajawea Park in Longview, Washington.

It was nice to be able to step out of the medical facility to take in the pretty view that is near the hospital. We ended up staying 3 hours with our sister today as she got medical treatment.

It's beautiful Gregg. Is this lake  Sacagawea? I love that area. The trees are gorgeous.

Yes, right next to PeaceHealth in Longview.

Thats lovely.

My mom used to work at the Monticello Hotel and we lived in the neighborhood by the lake. Fond memories. I always wanted to go in a paddle boat but never got the chance. But did picnic and nap there over the years.

Yes, in what is called the Civic Center of Longview.  The historic library and post office are on the right and left of the Monticello Hotel.

Wow, flood of memories there. That place was so grand, don't know if it still is, love the whole area around the lake, some real old houses there. I need to go visit, it's been a while. My bookkeeper lives there, maybe I'll take her to lunch 😆

Looking west from the boat launch this morning. October brings cooler temperatures, low clouds at sunrise. When I reviewed the photo, it kind of looks like a painting.

1908 Roller-skates Patent. I grew up on skates, loving to skate since I was young. Now I have a body that will no longer allow me to skate. I long for the days of being able to skate. I think of the coaches and friends I made at the rink who are now gone.

They taught me more than just skating. My music influences are based on skating. I will hear a song and say that's a great skating song! So many of the rinks I have skated at are now dust in the wind a memory.

Whether that be in Oregon, Washington, Montana, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, and South Carolina. The only rink in the Portland area is the beautiful Oaks Park which has been around over 100 years now. If you have never been, you should go.

My idea of paradise in the new system is a skating rink. Roller and ice. I would not need much land, as basketball court sized property would do well. My biggest problem is I am not mechanically inclined or much of a builder.
