The adventures included Hiking, white water rapid rafting, & of cause fly fishing. Rick & Jane decided to get a 2 man tent & some camping equipment. But then thought would they be safe from the grizzly bears?

Or at least that's what Adam and Mark thought; Rick took the apostle Paul's counsel on adaptability very literally, and to the country people he became a country person, for now he was an experienced bear hunter, and so had nothing to fear from any grizzly.

  • 3 weeks later...

That night their courage and fortitude was put to the test, for a grizzly pawed at the tent and shreaded one side of it to pieces - Rick had forgot to put the cooler in the car.

Upon hearing the clawing on the tent, Rick jumped out of the sleeping bag and ran as fast as he could out of the tent, oops, "I forgot Jane" as he turned around, ran back and grabbed her hand as she was just exiting the tent.

A similar thing happened us:

We were camping in Mt. Rainier National Park in WA in the week before a DC. My wife was pregnant with our first child so that would make it 1976. She had to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. We were warned about bears and to be careful. On the way back to our tent a bear snorted just feet from where we were walking. I jolted and started to run and then remembered I had a wife to look out for. I turned to get her, she had daggers in her eyes but I just grabbed her hand and hurried off. We learned later that another camper had left his cooler out on the picnic table on purpose so as to get closeup pictures of a bear.

What an ordeal Lynn. Ya that would be freaky..Our most dangerous critter. might be a snake, goanna, kangaroo, I have only seen bears at a zoo, your poor wife.& you...Man we should change this subject to your worst camping experiences..LOL.. we have learnt to put food in the car or hide it . Possums come eat, one night we were camping and we were asleep and we could hear russelling rubbish bags my hubby went out and confronted a big tall male kanagroo. He was aggressive, all hubby could do was use a broom. Our friends were accross from us and could see all the action,Its funny now.. Do you still go camping?

Rick left Jane in the car as he tip-toed over to Adam and Mark's tent, the bear snorted, Rick jumped out of his skin but Adam and Mark just snored away not even waken as yet by all the ruckus.

Yes we still camp within the comforts of a 32 ft. motor-home. Spoiled in our old age. We camped at KOA campgrounds on our Montana Vacation, nice swimming pools to beat back the heat. Not exactly roughing it but we enjoy it anyway. On this trip we had a doe and two fawn deer within 100 ft. of our camp and we saw a pack of wolves devouring a carcass in Jackson Hole valley near Teton National Park as well a cow moose and her two mooselings. No bear sightings this time in Yellowstone National Park. We traveled some 2,500 miles in 10 days and thought about going on to Wisconsin but then I didn't know if Rick would answer his door bell so we decided against it. :)

But the bear couldn't run fast enough - Rick shot it and a few hours later - well lets just say some tastey eating was going on - but as Jane was wiping her mouth with her sleeve - she said,

Rick was a fussy guy. Like his meat a certain way. He missed the Vegas burger all you can eat. Heart attack grill. He said wish we could go there again....

Jane replied - fussy boy hamburgers are from grills (and they all laughed as it sounded like a popular TV commercial in the states about Trix being for kids) - But they really did enjoy the outdoors, until ...

Rick showed his study the example or the Ethopian Eunich. & so Joshua came to realise that even though the convention had passed in another 2 months there would be another opportunity to get baptized. Yes?

He thought maybe Swahili was a mixture of French & Dutch. So he decided to learn the language. So that he could help out Joshua & in turn they were helping each other break the communication barrier.
