Flog It!

In the UK the BBC have a programme called Flog It!  Nothing to do with flagellation nor dead horses, but in English the word "flog" can also mean "sell".

The programme asks people to bring items they think may be antique and/valuable to be assessed with the thought that they may be selected to be sold at auction - or "flogged".

 

The venues chosen are often stately homes etc and today it was Capesthorne Hall in Cheshire.  In one of the rooms, the Dorothy Davenport room, was a four-poster bed, where Dorothy had embroidered a pelmet, a headboard cover and a throw, between 1610 and 1614.

The headboard cover had an interesting depiction of Adam and Eve in the garden. Here is a screenshot.

That is why I posted it. I saw it when I watched the programme today There was another top centre of the pelmet but the camera panned past it too quickly to get a clear screenshot.

So, Jehovah in the Garden, Adam picking leaves for cover, Adam and Eve leaving the Garden, who is that strange critter on the tree branch?...I don't see any snakes..

 

After further review, I do see a snake..

While I got rid of TV in 2005, Antiques Road Show was a favorite of mine.  Google "Antique Road Show  man with  chief's blanket"  I love his humble attitude.

After further review, I do see a snake..

I think that strange critter is a skeleton - meant to be death following them around from now on. . . . and the funny “cocoon” thing on the floor beneath it is probably Adam’s shroud waiting for him! ( I could be wrong but I think the artist had a sense of humour too. . note Adam’s hand shielding Eve’s breast from view in the “banished” side of the picture.) Also, the introduction of flies, insects and creepy crawlies after the banishment - facinating interpretation of Paradise Lost!

Antique Roadshow is my favourite in UK. People bring things with a good story - a family treasure that because of it's story, they won't necessarily be parting with it. The people giving appraisals on there are specialists in their field, so give a fair opinion and treat the people with dignity and respect.

 

Flog it! is OK, but tends to get the same things on each week and not such interesting stuff with interesting histories because the people brought it to the program to sell, so tends to be something they'd willingly part with. Flog it also tends to get repeated on TV over and over. One antique dealer on there died years ago, yet still appears on the programs in repeats - pointless repeating them after 10 years because trends/fashions and prices change.

 

For instance - Troika pots - not my taste - I would be willing to sell any I had for the silly prices this odd looking 1960s/70s studio pottery makes on Flog it! Not pretty - wouldn't give it house-room myself, yet it often gets on this program

 

What I don't like is when Antique dealers face a member of the public with an item they know nothing of, give a rubbish opinion and it is entered in a country sale auction with farm implements and junk and gets the person nothing in return. This often happens with our specialist subject - Collector's Toys. It's so annoying to see good collectable stuff wasted, wrongly described and undersold - We wished we had been there to give the person a fair price. It's very time consuming though following Flog It, as a dealer, around the country - we do know some of the dealers and discussed this with them.

Much thought was put into the design.  I'm not sure  why Adam is covering  Eve's breast  - is he hiding her shame or ceding to temptation?  In any case Eve was orginally behind him but after the fall in front and while he still looks to paradise his body is turned towards eve.  Very interesting.  Yes, after the fall but the creepy crawlies, the skeleton (representing death) and no Divine name do drive the point home of "Before and After"...  Not sure why there is a fly on  the top left but a butterfly on the top right though... it does seem to be saying that the sin was inevitable since the flowers on the left turn to ripe fruit on the right - but maybe that's symbolic of sin's fruit being death.  I would like to know why Eve's figleaf has  outgrown Adam's (pregnant? or symbolic that the artist thinks Eve has more to be ashamed of than Adam?)... indeed Adam seems to have physically shrunk after the fall and as has his figleaf (I hate to think what that symbolizes)...

 

Ah they don't make headboards like that anymore!

 

Hey, wouldn't  it be fun if in the new system there's a series "Did we flog what was yours?" where the original owners of things can explain their story, sort of like "The Inside Story" for furniture.
