Anyone considering seeing Dune when it comes out?

Recommended Posts

Saw the trailer and it looks pretty tight, and looking at interviews, it doesn't look extremely "woke", something I'm starting to find really tiresome with films.
I mean one character was genderswapped, and I'm still not sure how I feel about that. It didn't seem like it was explained in a way that promoted an agenda of any kind, but was brushed off with "the gender of this character didn't really matter"
Otherwise, it looks like it keeps to the themes of the novel. It looks like it stays true to Paul being the central character, to the story being his coming of age story.
It's supposed to only cover the first half of the novel though, and I believe Armeggedon might come before they get to cover the second half in film.
Just wondered with other sci-fi geeks' thoughts were on it:

It came up in conversation with an old friend recently.
In Papua New Guinea in the 70's, there was no TV. So books (and Bill Crosby cassettes) were the medium of choice for entertainment.
We talked about Dune. I had not seen the movie, so I watched the 1984 version last week. Based on that (nearly 3 hours!), I would not watch it again.
One thing I note: The re-make can often have no resemblance to the original. (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - a case in point.)
So I guess I will wait for the reviews.
How good the reviews are, will probably determine how soon I see it.
It took me over 35 years to see the first one!

Frank Herbert, L. Ron Hubbard. Easy mistake.
So many sci fi authors with H names haha

Just realized that pretty soon my last name is going to begin with an H...
and I like to write sci fi stories
Coincidence? Well, yeah, but it's a pretty good coincidence.

It's not exactly a remake. The David Lynch movie from 1984 had very little to do with the novel. It could be said it was inspired by the novel. It was a weird movie, like all by David Lynch, not for everybody's taste.

There was a two-episode mini series in 2000 that followed the story much more closely. This new movie is supposed to stick more to the novel too. The novel itself is wonderful, it impressed me a lot when I read it as a teenager, and again when I read it many years later.

Really not a fan of the Lynch movie.  I've heard it said more than once he was just the wrong director for that job.

I really enjoyed the SyFy TV mini-series from a few years ago.  Was really good but still could have been so much better.

Looking forward to this adaptation once we can return to theaters.

Was Dune the primary philosophy that began Scientology?

I thought that was the L Ron Hubbard books.

My mistake, sorry.

Rumor has, so the story goes, that there was the science fiction convention and there was a panel of guest celebrity authors.  The subject of religion came up and the claim was made, maybe by Hubbard, that it would be easy to create a religion.  The others scoffed at this idea and Hubbard basically said "Oh yeah?  Watch me."  Shortly thereafter Hubbard wrote his "Dianetics" book series which became the basis of Scientology.

So the story goes...

Phillipians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are of serious concern, whatever things are righteous, whatever things are chaste, whatever things are lovable, whatever things are well-spoken-of, whatever things are virtuous, and whatever things are praiseworthy, continue considering these things.

Thanks for that, I knew I had heard something  but was many years ago.

Does anyone remember when Star Wars producers got sued because they showed a giant dead sand worm. The Dune producers said it was a copyrifht violation. Star Wars people said it was just a common giant sand worm and not subject to copyright, or something like that.

Dune (the novel) is to Sci-Fi what Ben Hur is to movies, or Lord of the Rings is to Fantasy. It's the epic against which every other epic is judged.

Dune is one of those stories that is 'wheels within wheels'. Not overly complicated in what happens, but there's such a backstory to every scene that every line of dialogue could have three meanings. A lot of the novel is told in people's thoughts on what's happening. Something you can show with skill in a novel; but not on screen.

As a result, there's been no film adaptation that ever got it 'right'. It has to be as Epic as Lord of the Rings, and subtle as a spy thriller. No small number of people figured it could never be done properly.

I will say that this Director is well respected, and has produced a few films based on similar 'introspective' works. Also, he's stated repeatedly that he's a lifelong fan; and this is definitely a movie that requires the fans. Read the message boards sometime, the Dune fandom can be fanatical.

I think I've heard something similar.

YES!!!! So much from Star Wars was inspired by Dune. The terrain of Tattooine was inspired by Arrakis, the Sand Worms, etc.

I don't think I give Dune the book the credit iit deserves. I read it right at the end of my scify/fantasy period. That could be why I liked the first two Star Wars and considered the following ones contrived and boring. The original Dune movie couldn't wake me out of a deep slumber. Just how bad my memeory of dune is, in my mind I see Tom Cruise using his hooks to ride a sand worm. Get it? Dune, L Ron Hubbard, Scientolgy,  Frank Herbert, Sand Worms, and Tom Cruise wrapped altogether in my mind, total confusion. Hard enough keeking track of 'the more important things'.
