Has anyone seen any "good" movies lately?

Recommended Posts

I'm by myself - literally 24/7 due to a variety of reasons. By nature, I am not a movie hound. But, because of my situation, I have to find something to do with all the empty hours. I need to figure out how to RELAX, I can't seem to be able to do that, ever. Have you watched any good (appropriate) movies lately?

It is becoming so difficult to find anything in these wicked times - seems like it's all bad.

Also, we are not to watch rated R movies and yet I along with other sisters, are finding that some of the R rated movies are FAR FAR CLEANER than most PG and PG13 rated titles. Could Satan be behind this trickery? Often a movie will get an R rating only because of the subject matter. I am now frequently using the website IMSD Website because it lists EVERY detail of a movie's content so you can KNOW BEFOREHAND every detail of a movie's content and, what to expect. I highly recommend it to all of you.

I watch TV only when we have bad weather - but, I would like to open my horizon's here as well - any TV shows you like?

I have NetFlix and also have access to Amazon movies. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

To your point on ratings, I have been researching the movies I go to see regardless of ratings and make an informed decision based on the nature of the rating. I've skipped many PG-13s which I deem offensive while I've seen several R's that I deem the rating is simply for necessary mature content to get the subject matter across (like a Schindler's List type of movie for example).

One I would recommend (depending on your own conscience) is "The Lives of Others" Its a german film about oppression in West German under communist rule and it is a great, great movie.

It is R and I will detail why for you:

* There is no language whatsoever

* There is no man-made violence. There is an accident which is a little bloody.

* There is a sex scene which I would not really classify as nude (its a fat lady so some of her breast is drooped into exposure). Safe to say it will not incite any improper thoughts, and is essential in contrasting a character's empty life with another that has genuine passion and feeling.

So if you deem that acceptable, then by all means rent this movie.

Movie ratings ==> FAIL!

I, too, will skip many PG-13 and almost all R movies. However, I agree, I like to research the content of the movies beforehand. I made the mistake of mentioning a rated R movie here once (one that I thought was milder than MANY of the PG-13 movies out today). Well, that was a mistake... :whistling::clown:

I know of another website you can check for movie content - www.kids-in-mind.com

I don't know if you like old movies, but netflix has a ton of them. We watched one, I can never remember the name, I think it is called "Being there" It is on Netflix. Also many of the old bob hope movies. I don't know what exactly you like movie wise, so once I know that, I can recommend more

Absolutely. Forget the MPAA rating system. It's bunk! I have been BURNED by more PG-13 movies than any of the few selective R movies I have chosen to watch. I have no idea how most PG-13 movies get away with all their trash.

Use the "Common Sense Rating" instead... http://www.commonsensemedia.org/

On Netflix.com, you can see the Common Sense Ratings as well when you are looking at movies. I always look at WHY it was rated the way it was.

Funny thing about rating systems is they are different in each country. Brothers and sisters over here will not see a certain "rated R" movie but then over in Europe every brother and sister has seen it because the rating it received over there doesn't carry the same stigma as the MPAA rating over here.

Netflix is a service that can stream movies to your computer. It's costing me $8 per month and I have access to thousands of films to watch at any time I choose.

Common Sense Media is just a rating system that I think has more "common sense" than the MPAA.

I've brought this out in the forums before, but it applies well to this thread too.

For many years I worked in post-production at two different film labs in Hollywood. I saw many movies include what we'd call an "R-reel".

Once a picture goes to the rating board and gets a rating (PG-13, R, whatever) nothing can be added to the movie after it goes through ratings, but things can be removed and then it can be re-submitted to the board in the hopes of getting a better (less then R) rating.

But, R rated movies sell tickets. So I have seen studios add "R-reels" to movies that contain just enough nudity or F words to get it the R rating they wanted the movie to get, and then after it went through the rating process, these R-reels were removed before the film went into release, because usually, they didn't have anything to do with the plot anyway. Their whole purpose was to get the rating they wanted. So MANY R rated movies, no longer contain the footage that earned them the R rating anyway.

That is why you need to just use good judgement and do your own research. The whole rating system is flawed.

How about keeping this interesting - I just saw Avengers - GREAT MOVIE!!!!! :lol1:

My favorite part was towards the end when the main bad guy says to the Hulk - "I am a god - you dumb creator. And I WILL NOT BE BULLIED!" and then the hulk shows him what he thinks of that.

Let's just say - as the Hulk walks away (and NOT the bad guy) - the Hulk says, "Puny god." :lol2:

First, I send the children to watch a movie. When they comeback and say " oh it was really fantastic. lot of sex. lot of abuses. and violence."

then Me and my wife realise it is not a good movie for us so we need not watch.

When the children come back and say "oh. it was very awful movie. no sex. no violence or stunts. just boring..." then me and my wife realise it must a good movie to watch. And then we both go and watch that movie.

you see, we are very concerned...and we take valid suggestions before deciding to watch movies.

Aren't we very clever and wise?

Um, I hope your children are adults and not pre-teen or teens! Do you drop them off at the movie theater and then see what they say about the movie?

Just kidding! :lol2:

We all go together for the movie. Leave the children at the theatre. then me and my wife go for dining. By the time the children come back after the show and give us the report, we decide whether we should proceed to go for the next show or should we all return home. When we go to the next show, the children go for dining. ..........Hope I have cleared your query ... lol...........

It actually confuses me more. So you let your children see a movie and

When they comeback and say " oh it was really fantastic. lot of sex. lot of abuses. and violence." then Me and my wife realise it is not a good movie for us so we need not watch.

So your children decide what movies are "OK" for you and your wife to see AFTER they themselves see it?

You are joking, correct? Sometimes it's hard to tell on a forum :)

I like diversity in my movie choices..

Here is one movie and two major documentary movies that i enjoyed recently.

First is a documentary called "being Elmo a puppeteers story"

I never thought this documentary would appeal to me but after i watched the trailer,i had to see it.

(this movie is very clean)

watch the trailer here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRotWuJNIQA

Then there is a movie called "The way"

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1441912/

just a heads up (Someone smokes a marijuana cigarette in one scene of the movie

but other then that ,it's very clean)

watch the trailer here...

Another popular documentary called "Man on a wire"

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1155592/

just a heads up (there is a very quick sex scene in the movie were you see two naked butts for a few seconds,it's very minor)

watch the trailer here
