The videos and images on social media of Venezuela are horrific. Prayers for our brothers and sisters there, they've already endured so much.

These are the data that can be collected so far:

Victim figures: there are no official lists.

Most affected areas in order of damage:

1. Caracas, "

Most affected municipalities: Chacao (Altamira and Los Palos Grandes), Sucre and eastern areas

2. La Guaira State (Maiquetía, Catia La Mar and La Guaira)

Catia La Mar: several buildings collapsed on mountain slopes

Simón Bolívar International Airport (Maiquetía): partial collapse of the terminal roof

La Guaira: collapse of numerous buildings, including the Eduard's Hotel completely destroyed and several buildings severely affected

3. Yaracuy State (San Felipe, Yumare and surroundings)

Damage to homes and severe damage for being closer to the epicenter. The area is isolated and with less media coverage.

4. Carabobo State (Puerto Cabello, Valencia, Morón/Montalbán and northern zone)

Damage to infrastructure, buildings and reports of affected constructions in Valencia and coastal areas

5. Falcon State

Damage to homes and structures.

For those who try to communicate:

In Caracas, in the neighborhoods of Altamira, Los Palos Grandes and Chacao, users report sporadic mobile signal, WhatsApp and Instagram. Sectors such as Caricuao, Las Acacias, El Paraíso, La Vega and Montalbán are without electricity.

In La Guaira, Maiquetía and Catia La Mar there are problems with electricity and, consequently, for communications.

In Carabobo, infrastructure damage causes communication and Internet signal cuts in Puerto Cabello, Morón, northern Valencia.

The same happens in San Felipe and surroundings in Yaracuy and Miranda, in the areas of Guatire and Los Teques.

There are no general power cuts, but there are complete zones without supply and, therefore, without Internet access or telephone lines.

The list is of own elaboration from the open info, in this case they are not official data.

Other data:

-In all scenarios, there is a lack of sufficient rescue and medical equipment.

-They are improvising care areas for the evacuated, but in most of the country the assistance is chaotic.

-The government declared the National State of Emergency and the suspension of non-essential educational, labor and commercial activities throughout the country. In addition, the cutting of gas service in several affected regions was ordered. The temporary suspension of the Caracas Metro and the national rail system is in force.

-There is an alert for possible replicas.

-It is recommended to evacuate buildings with structural damage and prevent entry until you make sure they are safe.

That's all I could summarize from the reports. The information is preliminary.

I don't understand, why do tectonic plates move? Why does a volcano erupt? Is it natural or a consequence of human mismanagement?

Retired school teacher here. Tectonic plates move (slowly) b/c of  the way Jah made the earth. Tsunamis and volcanoes  occur when the bonds within rocks break, That is why we say Jehovah s a rock; his bond is THAT strong.

Tectonic plate movement is a natural consequence of how our earth is made, it is outside the control or influence of humans today. The consequences, however, are somewhat within human control through awareness of the dangers, constructing buildings capable of withstanding the strongest expected ground movements and how we live and work in the areas susceptible to the highest tidal waves.

 

Short term thinking is one factor. We don't live long enough to experience these potential disasters ourselves so we discount the chance of them happening. Some faults build stresses over millennia and the historical evidence isn't enough to convince people that there is a potential danger. Greed is another factor. Building to withstand large ground movements is possible but expensive, it is easy to gamble with other people's lives. The lack of safe options have people living and working in dangerous buildings in areas subject to dangerous ground movements or high waters from tidal waves. The dangers don't just exist close to known faults and tectonic plate boundaries, the ground composition is a factor as well (Matt 7:24-27). In many areas, the wind load against a building is stronger than any expected ground movement from earthquakes. On the other hand, alluvial fans and high ground water in sedimentary areas (silt and sand) that are great for growing things amplify ground shaking and are terrible for buildings. 

 

A perfect world would have us taking appropriate precaution in areas subject to ground movement and tidal waves. Adequate foundations, strong buildings, and low densities of people. Escape plans and other safety measures. A creator involved in our day-to-day activities and in control of the world around us could ease these stresses that build up in the tectonic plates. Daily or weekly movement of a hair's breadth would be more than enough to avoid catastrophic ground movement that causes these tragedies. 

Growing up, geology seemed boring, with the image of the old rock hound with his pointy rock hammer. However, living in a geologically interesting area (Nevada, USA) that clearly doesn't resemble the tectonic plate boundaries and simple volcanism taught in school started making me wonder and personally research some of the geologic aspects of the basin and range geology around me. Then a job opportunity came my way to work as an equipment operator for a university lab researching earthquake risk and I got to see firsthand various fascinating aspects of the ground we live on. If the spiritual aspect of my life wasn't a priority I would have pursued further education in this fascinating realm but I'll be content to learn more in the future when we're not constrained by grant funding or the choice of jobs that further mankind's destruction of the natural world.

These aftershocks are to be expected but can be particularly dangerous, as damaged buildings can finally collapse and rescue efforts have to be paused.

Could be but I believe this is being called another earthquake that occurred about 53 miles from the Caracas quakes.

Thank you all very much for helping me understand. I asked because I wondered if there is any use in Jehovah creating something so grand that moves and causes disruption to humans and animals. If there are eruptions and earthquakes in the new world, then we will need to take safety measures, even though Jehovah is in control.

 Over 1k Deaths so far and 50k missing latest data
