US Gas prices - up or down?

Recommended Posts

In my neck of the woods in regional NSW, Australia, allowing for US gallon size and currency conversion, diesel is currently US$7.23/gallon. 2 weeks ago it was US$4.63 ☹️

Reg Gas hit $2.05 per liter today in BC, while Diesel hit about $2.40 per liter at the high end, I travelled about 40 minutes to get a cheaper price at $2.05 per liter for Diesel yesterday.

Conversion to Gallons

$2.05 x 3.78541 = $7.76 ($5.67 USD)

$2.40 x 3.78541 = $9.08 ($6.64 USD)

In my area of regional NSW Australia today diesel ranges from $2.74.9 to $2.89.9 per litre.  This morning it was slightly cheaper by a few cents.

That equates to $10.40 to $10.97 per gallon.  Of course this is $AUD which means it would be less in $USD.

We own 2 diesel cars and get around 950-80 out of a tank so if we are careful can last a couple of weeks.  However atm my husband is travelling for work as we recently moved and he is finishing jobs off from our last area where we lived.  It is a 238km one way trip so he stays a few days works then comes home a few.  We are trying to keep our cars topped up.

"Average" prices might be high for a while:

Quote

A rapid drawdown in gasoline prices would require an immediate end to hostilities in the Middle East and a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the marine chokepoint that used to ferry most Persian Gulf fossil fuel exports to the rest of the world. But even if the war were to prove short-lived, there’s no guarantee gasoline prices would return to pre-conflict levels any time soon. Many predictions are pricing in a prolonged recovery timeline, including those issued by Trump’s own analysts.

Gasoline costs in the U.S. for 2026, including taxes, could average around $3.34 a gallon, according to a projection published last week by the Energy Information Administration (EIA), a semi-independent statistical agency under the Energy Department’s purview. As things stand, things aren’t likely to improve much next year, with per gallon prices averaging out at $3.18, according to the EIA.

Something I came across on Linkedin:

Firstly, THANK YOU everyone for your concern.

I'm ok ...just a bit shaken up, but l'll be fine.

For those who don't know what happened, I was robbed yesterday afternoon in broad daylight at the gas station.

After it happened my hands were shaking, I felt dizzy and I was probably in shock. My money was gone, so I called the police. They were fantastic and even called an ambulance because my blood pressure was through the roof.

The officer asked if I knew who did it...

I said:

"Yes... it was gas pump number 4" 💸🤣

3.40-3.60 a gallon where i'm at. We were tetering in the 2.20/2.50 range before someone decided to bully the people that hoard the oil -___________-

Then there's the cascading effect of higher fuel prices...

America Produces The Most Oil. So Why Are Gas Prices Surging?

If the United States is the world’s largest oil producer—in fact, if we are energy independent—then why are we still at the mercy of global events? And how can prices spike instantly when the gasoline in the tank was made from cheaper oil weeks ago?

People like easy answers, such as “corporate greed.” That is emotionally satisfying, but it doesn’t tell the full story. What’s happening is a function of global markets, supply chain realities, and predictable patterns in consumer behavior. In fact, much of what we’re seeing is exactly how the system is designed to work.

The U.S. leads the world in oil production, but oil isn’t priced locally, nor are prices set by oil companies. Because the U.S. exports oil to the global markets, it’s priced globally by traders bidding for oil. That is a distinction many people do not realize.

Our oil is dirty and must be refinded.   Refinery is the issue here from my understanding.   Whereas oil from the middle east is refined and much better than American oil.

All crude oil needs to be refined or broken into separate components before it can be used. Some crude oil is lighter and sweeter, less sulphur, than others, so is easier to refine, but all crude oil needs to be refined before the separate components are blended into gasoline.

State-by-state view of gas prices as Iran war pushes oil markets higher

Gas prices are rising across nearly every region, with some states already well above the national average.

As of April 2, the national average for regular gasoline stood at $4.08 per gallon, according to AAA – up $1.09 from a month earlier.

On the West Coast, drivers are seeing the highest costs, with prices reaching $5.89 per gallon in California and $5.36 in Washington. On the East Coast, gas prices are approaching or exceeding $4 in several areas, including $4.20 in Washington, D.C., and $4.01 in New York.

Didn't Trump say this would be a very short war? Didn't he say he could stop the war in Ukraine in a couple of days?

It seems difficult to believe his timelines...

This afternoon 2 gas station's one just apart by one street,  price around 12 noon was $4.09,and across the street it was $4.15.  Later same evening, both had new prices. 1st one price was $3.59, across the street it was $3.60.  The only thing I could think of was that all the gas lines, regular, mid grade and premium all had 15% more Ethanol.  Several local and some big nane news outlets said President Trump told the EPA to release Ethanol gas (corn whiskey) in the summer gas starting May 1st. But many stations have already done so raising prices like no tomorrow till Trump said will   May 1st.  All I know is I put gas in my car 2 weeks ago. I went milage wise 130 miles. I divided the gallons by the amount of gallons I put in my tank.  It cane out I only got 23 miles a gallon.  I was like what????  Before I got 35 miles a gallon.  And my car running sluggish.  It like at a stop light and the idle rpm go down enough to stop the car.  So not I have to go buy anti Lucas fuel stabilizer for the Ethanol gas.  It gives you low gas mileage.  If your car sits for 30 days or more, water will sit at the bottom of fuel tank.  Water cannot run the engine.

I paid $3.21  yesterday - Costco in Georgia.

All things considered, not bad from most others.... The gov did suspend the gas tax which definitely helped.

I'm in Gainesville, GA, and the closest station to me (Chevron) has unleaded regular at $3.79

There's an app I use called Upside that gives cash back when you buy gas. I've used it for years and saved probably close to a hundred dollars.
