Picked from my fig tree today.

Last year we got one fig!  Today I picked 5 and there are more ripening.  We are so pleased because this tree was in a pot when we moved in, and we put it in the ground and 5 years later it is very happy and giving fruit.

It finally figured out what to do....

Is it a type of wren? You have beautiful birds up at Queensland. Looking forward to some time with nature in a few weeks when I'm holidaying at Cairns.

And I hope you're feeling better soon too, Niall.

I think it's a Superb Fairy Wren. (Wiki Link)

Where in Cairns are you visiting? Have you been there before? You've just missed the Convention up there.

Here is a bit of interesting information that probably wouldn't make it onto the back page of the Awake!

WAS IT DESIGNED?

The Faecal Sac of Some Nestling Birds

"A fecal sac (also spelled faecal sac) is a mucous membrane, generally white or clear with a dark end, that surrounds the feces of some species of nestling birds. It allows parent birds to more easily remove fecal material from the nest. The nestling usually produces a fecal sac within seconds of being fed; if not, a waiting adult may prod around the youngster's cloaca to stimulate excretion. [...] Removal of fecal material helps to improve nest sanitation, which in turn helps to increase the likelihood that nestlings will remain healthy. It also helps to reduce the chance that predators will see it or smell it and thereby find the nest."(Wikipedia)

The young birds stop producing faecal sacs just before they begin to fly.

What do you think? Did the Fairy Wrens ability to deliver their faeces in a hygienic, easy to carry (and biodegradable), sac come about by evolution? Or was it designed?

We are going to a stay at a home in Redlynch this time, usually we take a suite or hotel rooms at the Rydges Esplanade next to the hospital.  We try to go to escape the cold if we can, but this year we're going a bit later.  Love it up there!  You anywhere near Cairns? I know it's a big state :)

I lived in Cairns for about 20 years. I was contracted to look after the City Safe project for the Council. I looked after all the Security Patrols in and around the CBD and Esplanade, as well as the CCTV System. So, I know all the bad stuff about Cairns. :)

I know Rydges well. It's a great place to stay if you have kids. Redlynch is a bit out of town, but then that area was growing rapidly when I left. I think the Brothers were looking at Redlynch as one option to build a new Kingdom Hall. I was going to go back for the convention this year, but missed out because of work.

I left Cairns, for Toowoomba (inland from Brisbane), in 2014. Partly because I wanted to get away from Security and Enforcement, and partly to get closer to my flesh family. I feel really close to the Cairns South Congregation, and miss them a lot - that's where I was when I got Baptised. If this system is still going when my mother passes away, I'll move back up there. Either that, or back to Papua and help out with the preaching work up there.

I hope you have great time up there. I'm jealous. :)

Canning tuna wasn't on the list of things to do this year but I didn't have any left and Brother Kevin said he'd loin out my tuna if I got some. I bought 5 fish at 65 pounds, netted :uhhuh: me 31 full jars and 1 broken jar, having tuna for lunch for next couple days, and a few chunks to cook up with butter, lemon and dill.

Here's our local fish market, and Kevin hard at work!

Did a video of my garden for a friend named Jo (Joanne) I'll post it in Post a Video, I did artichokes this year and found I didn't know when to pick them nor how to eat them. So they're all turning into thistles. COOL!

And I did black (dark purple) beans, string beans. WOW! I'll be doing them next year.

Indonesian sculptor Ichwan Noor takes the iconic components of vintage VW vehicles and warps them into perfect spheres and cubes. The large-scale sculptures leave the uncanny impression of being instantly recognizable, yet leaving you wondering just how the artist constructed them. It’s the immediate familiarity that initially attracted Noor to using the cars as a medium in the first place. “I see the VW Beetle as one of the most successful designs, one that people will always be familiar with,” he says about the ongoing sculpture series.
