The thumbnail for No. 2 2018 issue of The Watchtower has already been uploaded in Akamai servers.

To clear out where the thumbnail has been uploaded. The pic is not yet uploaded in JW.org, but rather in Akamai servers (the org's CDN service provider).

What's a CDN?

CDN is cloud delivery network. The way I understand it, it is a network of computers for distributing files. These computers or servers contain copies of the same file and are located in various places. Thus, when someone needs to access the file, it will come from the computer/server nearest to his physical location. This will prevent problems like slow loading of web pages or slow downloading of files.

Here's a good link about CDN: https://www.incapsula.com/cdn-guide/what-is-cdn-how-it-works.html

Thanks for the preview. And thanks for the explanation of the difference between jw.org and akamaihd.net. I still don't get it yet, but it's in the right direction. (What's a CDN?)

The amount of materials downloaded from JW.org is tremendous. If the brothers had to keep it all in-house that would mean spending huge amounts of money in lots of servers with immense storing space, a huge bandwith and a host of technicians taking care of all of them. Instead, they hire a company (Akamai) specialized in storing files. That company already has a worldwide infrastructure with servers in many different countries. They keep a copy of the publications and videos in those servers, and when you click a link to download a file at JW.org, it redirects you to the nearest or the least busy machine. That way the brothers just need to take care of the site JW.org, not the downloads. Outsourcing these services is much cheaper and works much better.

We should always keep in mind that these offsite CDN services are not free.  We pay to use their services and we pay for all downloads and streams of material that come through them.  That is how those companies make a living.  Since the only way our organization can pay for the downloads we make is by our donations,m we should prayerfully consider being willing to share a little more of our resources (money) with the World Wide Work contribution program.

Okay, the next thing we want to know is: How did you find the thumbnail of the Watchtower?

(1) Go to the web page featuring the latest public Watchtower issue. As of today (January 30, 2018), it is here:

https://www.jw.org/en/publications/magazines/watchtower-no1-2018-jan-feb

(2) If you're using Google Chrome browser, right-click the small picture of the magazine's cover located on the right side. From the options, select Copy image address.

If you are using Internet Explorer instead of Chrome, right-click the small image and choose Inspect element. Copy the image address inside the quotation marks after img src.

(3) Open a new tab. Right-click on the URL bar and Paste the image address copied from step 2. Just paste, don't hit Enter yet.

(4) You will notice that there are two 201801 in the image address. It means January 2018. Since the next public Watchtower issue will be on May 2018, change both 201801 to 201805. Press Enter.

(5) Voila! The thumbnail will occur! If no thumbnails were yet uploaded, a simple File not found will be displayed. These steps also apply to Awake!, but with a different month number, of course.
