all things star trek

Go to an actual comic store. I have not had that experience.

Fan fic is going to go all over the place. "Real" comics tend to stay close to canon.

It never used to be that way. With all the successive Trek iterations, canon really did fly out the window, though. 😞

There's your problem right there 🤣

I'm kidding. OK, not much as many a truth is said in jest. Fanfic, especially today, is going to be influenced by the fans writing it. Fans that do not answer to editors or what the audience will purchase with money.

There are plenty of good Trek novels out there from before the LGBT days. There are plenty of stinkers, too 🤣. Of course, this doesn't help if you've alr read all of them.

I like that suggestion about comics. Might find quality digital downloads for a reasonable price.

There are some gems in the fanfic world, but you gotta be patient and have endurance in looking for them.

I do like some fan films like Continues and their 11 episode series on YouTube. Same with a few others like Star Trek Exeter.

I was reading it over 40 years ago, and you are right. I have several zines, but you never knew whether what you bought would be any good. The really good stories - then and now - are, as you say, gems, and they really are few and far between. Otoh, we were all in sync on certain things. We all knew what canon was. In later Trek iterations, it was clear that Berman, Braga, and others couldn’t have been TOS fans.

Novels. Yeah, I started off with the James Blish books in the early 70’s and moved on from there. I was never anything other than a TOS girl, though, so when the TNG stuff started coming out, I kind of drifted away. I did read ‘Strangers from the Sky,’ though, and enjoyed it, and I have a couple of audiobooks on my iPad that I have yet to get through.

Star Trek Continues was *amazing.* It’s the only fan production I have ever watched that felt true to the series, and if you looked at Vic Mignona from a certain angle, you’d swear he was Shatner. I think “What Ships Are For” was my fav episode.

I will read it, but haven't yet. I skimmed through it and it looks like a very good read.

I got a 2nd copy so I can read it and not worry about messing up the copy I'm gonna get signed. 😁

Nearly all the reviews I read said that the stories harkened back to original Trek, so that’s definitely a good sign.

Got my signatures from William Shatner, and everything else I wanted.  Mission accomplished.

Oh, don’t get me started on SNW…

You don't like it? 😯

‘Don’t like it’ would be an understatement. It totally ignores canon, makes Spock look like an idiot, not to mention, emasculates him…I could go on. Kurtzman did a great job with ‘Fringe,’ but he doesn’t know Trek at all. Just my .02.

I’m afraid to ask what you think about Discovery…

Remember that Spock is half human, and no doubt had to develop to the point that we know him in TOS.  I look at it as character growth.  :whistling:

In any case, SNW has the spirit of Star Trek, and that's what matters the most to me.  As much as I love Star Trek in general, I am definitely not a hardcore fan.

Julsey, get it!

I just finished reading the first volume and I could not put it down. It was the best written Star Trek comic I've come across thus far.

The dialog between the characters was on point. It really sounded like them! I found that lacking in all the other ones I've read.

The story is captivating, and there's callbacks to TOS episodes that you should really enjoy, especially if TOS was your jam.

I have to get the next volume now...they left me hanging. 😝

I have it! Now I just have to read it. It starts with a story about a hypergiant, yes??

And, yes, TOS is definitely my jam! 😉

Since I saw TOS, TNG, Voyager, Enterprise and DS9 when the first aired ... Not sure you would say I have a particular jam - but I am a little partial to TOS

TOS is my favorite likely because that was my first Trek.

The TNG era is solid Trek in my opinion. The quality declines starting with VOY, but there are mitigating factors.

Not a fan of ENT not the Abrams movies. I like Beyond as the best of the 3.

Im mixed on DISCO. Season 2 better than 1. Season 3 better than 2. Season 3 is what DISCO should have been from the start.

Not much of a fan of PIC. I think the short seasons with only 1 story either aren't well written or aren't a good fit fit Trek.

I like SNW despite the flagrant disregard of continuity. It's a separate timeline in my opinion, so I've come to peace with it.

LD was fun but breaks the 4th wall with the constant references to other series.

PRO was likewise fun and well appreciated.

I didn’t watch the Abrams movies until a couple of years ago. Definitely a different timeline, and the start of the real decline of ST. Beyond was my least favorite, I’m afraid.

Discovery was so violent that I had to look away at times, then wondered why I watched it, especially with all the gay and pronoun stuff added to it.

Never really watched TNG, though I tried. Same with VOY, DS9. I did try. I actually did like ENT, but it had massive problems, too, but I liked the naïveté of Archer.

Picard. Too old. The TOS crew got retired 25 years after they appeared. It’s been about 37 years for TNG. And I hated how they kept inserting TNG into everything, ESPECIALLY the last episode of ENT.

My appreciation has grown. I was lumping that in with TNG era. It's some of the best Trek out there.
