Space notice on Windows Explorer

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone reading this,

I'm looking for help in resolving a matter of my PC warning me of my computer running out of space every 2-5 minutes while I'm on anything online. It's annoying, and I have no clue on what to do to fix it.

Please somebody, anybody with computer knowledge help me solve my issues with my Windows  Explorer PC.

Here's a picture \

Use file Explorer. Right click on the drive and use the tools to check the drive for errors and then try consolidate your files. This can take some hours, depending on the size of your drive.
What puzzles me, is the warning is for the 'D' drive. Normally the 'C' drive is the default drive. Can you please tell us how old your PC is?
Perhaps it is just a matter of making the C drive the default - instead of the D drive.
(In the old days, the CD/DVD used to be the 'D' drive. Typical, these had NO free space, as they were primarily used to 'read' and not 'write' data/files.)

Instead of "Command Prompt (Admin)" it may say "Windows Powershell (Admin)" - use the one your computer has and proceed

It should look something like this - just follow the instructions (you type the part that is in yellow) ...

remember, use the volume number on your computer that matches "Ltr D" in your list

You can close this window by either clicking the "X" in the upper right corner or type "Exit" and hit <Enter>

Got it in 2014.

Sounds like the May update caused the problem.

I will Bro. Thank you so very much. I'm so scared I will mess something up until I'm afraid to even attempt to do so. I'm going to wait until tomorrow to attempt to do what you showed in your post. Hopefully I can follow it right and not mess up. I'm to nervous and anxious to do so now. I hope you understand.

That's what I read.

So based on what we read, it appears the Windows 10 May update swapped the default letter from C to D.

The instructions seem to point to a resolution (ie delete D), but failing that, you may need to take it to someone technical.

We are assuming that your PC is running Win 10, and we assume that the May update was applied.

Hope the instructions referred to above fix your problem.

Sorry we are not closer to pop past and check a few things. Do a 'System Backup', so that you can 'roll back' any changes.

It is good to remember that this small (500 mb) drive is always there.  It was put there or made during the original installation.  It contains some restore/recovery files.  It is NOT supposed to have a user accessible "letter".  When everything is correct, and you look in the file explorer for "this PC" you should only see letters that represent drives you can access.  My drive D is a second hard drive I use for storage.  I do have a "recovery partition" but it has not letter (see attached).

The problem update assigned a letter to that partition.  Windows checks the partitions to see if they are OK.  This recovery area is full (as it should be).  Since it now has a letter assigned, the program doing the checking thinks it is a problem that needs fixing.  The others have showed how to remove the letter.  As soon as the letter is gone, Windows won't check it anymore and the error will go away.

Sorry for the delay, life already hectic and having to do this is like more to my pile because of fear of not doing it right.  Anywho, this is what I came up with. 20190101_144642.thumb.jpg.2655c35b886ebb4b3056264baf96f35f.jpg

When I click on the black box it always brought me to this. After that nothing happens because there are nothing to delete. Then I tried following Qapla's instructions and came up with other windows, not the one he'd shown in his post.

I have other pictures but can't upload it. I'm going to have to have someone else look at it for me.

Thank you for your help and I'm sorry I didn't get it right.

It doesnt seem odd to you, that it says D is out of memory, but then shows it is empty?

That would confuse me. Sorry, i will retract all my reactions and will not react further.

Yes it does make  me question the whole point of the popup, and thus made me seek help.

No offense Sis. I was concerned about what was confusing to you.  I don't know what to do, more help the merrier, right! Don't feel that way please. I apologize for making you feel like that Sis.
