Earthquakes In One Place After Another...

There have been 15 quakes already today in the 5.0 and greater range, not counting the major quake above, which was just upgraded to a 7.6.

 

My phone has not stopped buzzing.

Many of the big quakes are pre-shocks and after-shocks of the 7.6.

There's been a 7.7 earthquake in the South Pacific today which triggered a Tsunami warning for various places

The findings, published Aug. 2 in Nature Scientific Reports, are an important step toward improved short-term earthquake forecasting and risk assessment.

 

Scientists at Oregon State University looked at 44 years of seismic data and found clear evidence that temblors of magnitude 6.5 or larger trigger other quakes of magnitude 5.0 or larger....

 

A temblor is most likely to induce another quake within 30 degrees of the original quake’s antipode – the point directly opposite it on the other side of the globe.

As was mentioned, the antipode of New Caledonia and the Loyalty Islands is the Western Coast of North Africa.

Yes.  Michael Janitch/Dutchsinse has been observing this antipodal earthquake activity for years now, and sharing his 'citizen scientist' research with the rest of us.

 

If this system of things were to go on long enough, I am convinced the rest of his earthquake forecasting observations would be proven to be equally as accurate. 👍

There werechirty-one more 5.0+ quakes on Thursday, Feb. 11th.

 

The quakes seem to be spreading out and hitting a wider area now.

And this is apparently an aftershock from the 9.0 earthquake that happened on march 11, 2011.

It’s been upgraded to 7.3. The Japanese scale only goes up to 7, and it was a 6-plus. It’s believed to be an aftershock from the massive earthquake that hit northeastern Japan in 2011! 😱

More large shock are expected.

Some minor damage at the Fukushima Nuclear power plant, but officials say it is not a worry at this stage. Expressways have been blocked by mudslides and the Bullet train (Shinkansen) cancelled for now. There have been no major injuries, but people have relived the horror of the big Tohoku earthquake 10 years ago, and some are evacuating to shelters. Minor damage from debris falling from buildings in the street.
