Wildfire Blazes Near World Headquarters of Jehovah’s Witnesses in New York, U.S.A.

On November 9, 2024, a wildfire broke out approximately two kilometers (1.2 mi) northwest of the World Headquarters of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Warwick, New York, U.S.A. This slow-moving wildfire has already burned some 2,000 hectares (5,000 acres) of land. Local officials expect the fire threat to persist until the area receives significant rainfall.

 

 

Currently, there is no imminent danger to the various Bethel facilities in the area, including Warwick, the Ramapo construction site, and the broadcast studio in nearby Tuxedo Park.

That video from supervisor Dave McMyllen got me tearing up 🥹 Why? Because even non-witnesses can see the love Jehovah’s worshippers have for fellow neighbors. It’s a monumental witness.

Among many things, this fellow neighborly love was what drew me years ago to Jehovah.

Update from the New Jersey Forest Fire Service

 

WILDFIRE UPDATE: Jennings Creek Wildfire - West Milford, Passaic County

 

At 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service achieved 90% containment of the Jennings Creek Wildfire burning in Passaic County, NJ and Orange County, NY.

 

10 structures were threatened by the fire in New Jersey, including the Long Pond Ironworks Historic District. No structures were evacuated.

 

Forest Fire Service crews will remain on scene for the next several days to continue to improve containment lines and address areas of concern until significant precipitation occurs to ensure public safety. Smoke is expected to remain present until significant rain falls over the fire area.

 

This will be the final update for this incident unless significant developments occur.

 

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation remain in unified command for this incident.

6pm on 11/15/24

 

Today’s fire operations built on the tremendous progress made yesterday. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) Forest Rangers led dozens of volunteers throughout today’s operations.

 

Approximately 300 firefighters from six state agencies, as well as dozens of volunteer fire companies conducted suppression efforts today. They were joined by 18 wildland firefighters from Montana and two from Colorado.

 

The fire burned 5,201 acres and is now 88 percent contained.

 

There are currently no evacuations in place and no structures at immediate risk. As fire suppression continues, traffic congestion and smoke and particulate matter in the air are anticipated.

NASA's Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) US/Canada does not show the Jennings Creek Fire anymore, presumably because it is deemed to be now 'contained' ... though there are currently around nine forest fires shown on the eastern side of the US, one near LA on the western side, and around 20+ on the western side of Canada:

Article on the front page of Yahoo! news states that the NY wildfire has broken containment. Jesse Dwyer, a supervisor in Warwick, NY states that "efforts overnight by both local and regional firefighters to protect structures were successful and no structures are presently in danger."

This morning’s briefing went extremely well. Fire crews will be winding down operations to reduce the overall footprint within the community. However, interior fire crews will continue working around the clock to identify any hot spots within the containment zone and they will continue doing this for at least another week or until we are all 100% confident the fire has been extinguished.

The voluntary evacuation has been fully rescinded for all of Wah Ta Wah Park as well as all of Edgemere as of 9am this morning. We have also opened up East Shore Rd for non-emergency travel effective immediately. We ask all travelers to use extreme caution on East Shore as tree crews continue to work in this area removing hazardous trees. Additionally, we are somewhat concerned with sediment run off during rain events. Please use extreme caution while traveling East Shore during and after any significant rain event. Rainfall is predicted for Thursday and we will monitor the area very closely for any sediment runoff into the roadways.

The fact that we lost zero structures in this event is a true miracle. This is a testament to the hard work, skill and dedication of our local fire departments, as well as regional partners and the State Park Service. They single handedly saved our community and we are forever grateful for their service. I can confidently say the success of this operation would not have been possible without volunteer efforts. From the volunteer fire EMS to civilian volunteers delivering meals to the front lines. I have never before seen so many committed volunteers come together for a unified cause under such extreme circumstances and it has become so clear what makes our community so great – our dedicated volunteers. On behalf of the Town Board and the entire Town of Warwick, we thank you.

I'm glad that lake is there! LOL

 

The scale map is also helpful. I've been a similar distance from large uncontained fires before (I live in California) and can definitely be scary and at the very least unpleasant with orange skies and air thick with smoke.

 

Now for the real question; do bethelites get to windsurf on that lake in the summer?

Thanks. That was my Sophie. She was a Papillion/Pomeranian mix. She was very precious. I miss her.
