Potential redesign ideas for v5

Recommended Posts

I have no idea if it’s possible but I use the forum mostly on my phone. I would love if the users info showed their name and location.  Otherwise if I need to figure it out I have to click their profile, scroll all down to that info, then go back and edit the post to include name.
The location, when available, just helps in understanding a post sometimes, especially for those outside of the US. Cultures etc being different….

Lots of members have quotes that are auto included on their posts and those show up. Can name and location be added somehow to show up even when on a mobile phone?

Jer 29:11-“For I well know the thoughts I am thinking toward you, declares Jehovah, thoughts of peace, and not calamity, to give you a future and a hope.”

Psalm 56:3-“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”
Romans 8:38-”For I am convinced...”

That's not practical. What if you edit a post three days after you post it? But meanwhile someone quotes your post (your original post), and comments on what you wrote the first time? We would lose all sense of continuity.

Actually you can a similar thing on Facebook...where you can edit a comment forever and  there is an edit history that stays with the comment....to me that is quite practical 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I may be tired and in pain :wheelchair: but I'll never   :surrender: to it just send some encouraging words or hugs  :kisscheek:  :encourage:  and I'll return the same   :kisscheek:  :encourage:

The same thing applies to deleting posts. If posts could be freely deleted or modified, the flow of the discussion would be affected.

That's why it's important to think twice before clicking "Send".

I was actually referring to deleting a post that (or rather deleting a topic) that I would have made...( Instead of having to ask the mods to remove a comment 😕) Not in mid flow of a conversation...unless someone hasn't commented on that particular post...🤷‍♀️

  • 2 weeks later...

Unfortunately, social media introduced this idea of deleting posts. On social media, where the posted content revolves around "Me", this makes sense. But on forums like ours, the posted content revolves around the *topic* and the community as a whole.

We have had people that contributed thousands of posts, and then suddenly wanted to rage-quit the community and demand all their posts be taken down. Sorry, that's not happening. The discussions/conversations would make little sense if that were possible.

You have a 15 minute edit window. After that, we are usually happy to accept reasonable requests to Edit a post, such as to remove names, delete a selfie or photo of someone else who didn't like that you uploaded their pic, and more.

Could there be consideration to return to using unique gravitars? Or is that an unnecessary expense?

Right now the default icon for members not using an avatar is a color swatch with their first initial. At a glance people with the same initial are easily confused. At least by me.

Phillipians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are of serious concern, whatever things are righteous, whatever things are chaste, whatever things are lovable, whatever things are well-spoken-of, whatever things are virtuous, and whatever things are praiseworthy, continue considering these things.

Is there any way to tell what the symbols are? Sometimes on comments you guys have little Legends or symbols. Like now I have a little green check by a topic that I had and I'm trying to figure out what it means. Do y'all have a legend for what you use for symbols on here somewhere and what do they mean? And if not can you add a legend for symbols? If it's not to much trouble.

Could it mean 'solved'? Does it say anything above the OP?

Matthew 6:22 - The lamp of the body is the eye. If, then, your eye is clear*, your whole body will be full of light*.

I don't know if it means solved because I can't find a legend and I also don't know what the acronym OP means. 🤣

OP = Opening Post. The first post you wrote in that thread.

Is this the thread?

OP also means "Original Poster"

Either way, they refer to the first post in a thread - the post itself and/or the person who started it

It should be noted; this usage of "OP" is not only used on JWTalk - it is common jargon on all of the forums I have ever visited.

IPS removed Gravatar support years and years ago. It would take a 3rd party plugin application to possibly bring it back. There are some coders that would probably take on the job.

If you Mouse-Over the green checkmark, the pop-up will say "Solved". Bascially the checkmark means that the topic was marked with a solution.

So far... I have a private Demo site. Upgrading that went smooth. That is where I have been playing around with the new design options and Admin area.

Last night I upgraded my personal community. It did not go so smooth. Sections of the site were down for a couple hours while I worked out the bugs - most of which were in the Pages/Articles section. I use the same 3rd Party Pages Plug-in on my site as do the admins here on this one, which is not compatible with v5. I had to manually revert all the pages back to the default display, and delete the templates for the 3rd party plug-in - something I will have to do ahead of time when we move forward with upgrading here.
