Automatic registration of men to U.S. Military draft system begins December 2026

Recommended Posts

For our brothers in the United States should take notice of this possible situation. Although it may not be a huge deal at this time but still something to pray about as this can escalate as time passes by.

  • bvr changed the title to Automatic registration of men to U.S. Military draft system begins December 2026

From the article,it seems this issue has been ignored by several administrations probably because it just doesn't agree with the current principles of human right.

I doubt the US will want to do this after all the judicial precedence that clearly shows this to be a violation of human right, there will be widespread protests and criticism.

People are very enlightened today and want to assert their human rights, the government can't force people to serve the greed of politicians.

A number of European countries are also becoming more aware of their shortfalls in the size and structure of their armed forces. It is always wise for our families to consider how they should prepare for any such eventuality. Maybe, once every few months, a family worship discussion could consider what neutrality means in today's world.

The US already has the draft, this would just streamline the process.

https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2026/04/08/automatic-registration-for-us-military-draft-eligible-men-to-begin-in-december/
Currently, almost all male U.S. citizens and immigrants aged 18 through 25 are required to self-register within 30 days of their 18th birthday, with late registration available until an individual turns 26.

The Selective Service System, the federal agency that maintains a database of registered U.S. males who are considered draft-eligible in the event of a national emergency, submitted a proposed rule to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs on March 30, according to the office’s dashboard.

It’s not a draft per se but a registry of men eligible if the draft comes into effect.

Interestingly I saw something about Germany now requiring men to seek permission from the military before traveling abroad for more than 3 months of time.

well that changed quickly!  lol. I just saw a news clip this week. Evidently people just became aware of the new law. Now it’s suspended.

However it does seem there is a trend of ensuring they know how many and who could go to war at any given moment. The political climate has caused more talk of military service and drafts for sure.

For those unaware here in the United States, there's an announcement every year at our midweek meeting reminding the brothers as they approach 18 to ensure they fulfill their legal obligation to register for the draft. (I don't know if it's still the case, but the secretary also used to provide a reminder. )

This applies to any man between the ages of 18 and 26 who is a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident, or otherwise not in a valid nonimmigrant visa status.

The exception is for international students and others in the United States on valid nonimmigrant visas. If they overstay their visa or otherwise lose that valid status, they are then required to register for the draft. Or if their residency changes and they become a permanent resident, they have that obligation to register.

Under the current system

I was a teenager of the 1960s.  We had the draft (not just the registration).  First you registered, then there was a conference (if you were applying for an exemption). then there was a physical and eventually there was an actual induction into the armed services (or jail).

On the original form, when first filed, you needed to list all of your previous addresses.  They gave you a 4" blank with 6-8 lines.  They said if you needed more space add an additional page.  In my case it was "pages".  By my 18th birthday I had lived 26 places.

The thing most of us don't remember, is there were only minimal electronics and digital devices.  The papers were hand-typed on a typewriter.  Copies were made by using carbon paper (but wouldn't include the writing on the original form).  Phone calls were made on landlines with no recording.  Information was exchanged at the speed of surface mail.  Meetings were in person (in my case 250 miles away).  So the simple act of turning 18 was a bureaucratic ordeal as well as a spiritual one.

It took me from 1965 to 1971 to get them to recognize me as a minister.  It lasted a little over a year and then the Vietnam War ended.

From my recollection we haven't had the draft since the 70's or early 1980s ...it was a big issue of the draft back in the 1970s regarding the Vietnam war...

I may be tired and in pain :wheelchair: but I'll never   :surrender: to it just send some encouraging words or hugs  :kisscheek:  :encourage:  and I'll return the same   :kisscheek:  :encourage:

No sistema atual

It's the same in Brazil.

This is correct.  When I was 17-1/2, the "draft ended".

I looked into this just now, and it seems that President Ford suspended registration for 18-25 year old males.

Then President Carter reinstated registration.  And this self-registration is still a requirement.  But, no one will be inducted into the military until Congress passes a law and the President signs it.

This news item is saying that the Selective Service System wants to move from self-registration to automatic registration.  I would compare it to receiving a social security number automatically on the day you're born, as opposed to applying for that when you're ready to enter the work force.

There is a difference between having the draft and being drafted. I was discussing the former.
