Flat Rainbows??? 571d787b50706_Woweyes.gif.ae4ad3e158a032

The story behind the flat rainbow!

Kristine Todd captured this great photo of "rainbow colours" across the sky in Halifax.

Summer is the season for showers.  Daytime heating triggers afternoon showers;  these showers offer relief from the heat and often paint glorious rainbows across the sky.
The other day, a viewer called the weather centre asking about a horizontal rainbow in the sky.  She said there were no rain clouds in sight, yet this lovely rainbow stretched across the sky.

What the caller described was not a true rainbow; this rainbow of colours is called a circumhorizontal arc.  It looks like a rainbow that's been set on fire, but this phenomenon is as cold as ice.

The arc isn't a rainbow in the traditional sense because it’s a result of light passing through wispy, high-altitude cirrus clouds made up of tiny ice crystals. The sight occurs only when the sun is very high in the sky (more than 58° above the horizon). What's more, the hexagonal ice crystals that make up cirrus clouds must be shaped like thick plates with their faces parallel to the ground.

When light enters through a vertical side face of such an ice crystal and leaves from the bottom face, it refracts, or bends in the same way that light passes through a prism. If these crystals are aligned just right, the whole cloud lights up in a spectrum of colors.
With a circumhorizontal arc or flat rainbow, the red is on the upper side of the line of brilliant colour.

When I first saw a picture of China's Rainbow Mountains, I thought for sure it had to be photo-shopped.

Research proved me wrong.  China's Rainbow Mountains are the REAL deal.571d79caabac6_YesSmiling.gif.d9ce5b5715a

Ross,

I am stupefied ....I've never heard of this mountain range,  but how could I've not seen it somewhere??. That surprises me, because they are so beautiful, exotic and one of a kind.  I would have thought that some show like 60 Minutes would have done a story on these phenomenal mountains.  They are truly a visual gem...thanks for sharing your pictures.

I was just as stupefied as you.  Unbelievable that I had never seen a photo of them til today.

That's why I thought they had to be fake. ^_^

I have about 3,000 outside my back door you're welcome to. They even try coming in the house if the door is left open long enough. Well so does the squirrel and the chipmunk, looking for the sunflower seed I have in the door. Then we have bear, a deer with her 2 little ones, neighbor dog.....

We have had hundreds of acres of forest burned, in a fire that lasted three days. So many helicopters dropped water, there were some horizontal  rainbows. I think the fire is out b/c it has rained.  Police made calls, late last night, that the emercency situation was not over, but I do not believe anyone was actually evacuated.

Saw this as an article in Mother Earth News and learned about fruit walls. I've always wondered why Europeans had so many brick walls. Here's at least partially why they did or  else they used a protective wall for a 2nd purpose-  http://www.lowtechmagazine.com/2015/12/fruit-walls-urban-farming.html

Isn't this pretty? A multi functional wall. The article said they could form the walls around each other to make a sort of micro-climate where they could grow things usually only grown in Mediterranean regions. Fascinating. Looks like apples here or maybe figs?

5720f21640494_fruitwall.jpg.1f8d6cc055f6

Here's an example of this micro-climate growing. So much to learn in the NS from those of times past in how to do all sorts of things now deemed  impossible, or at the very least horribly expensive.

This is a fruit wall that eventually had glass attached, to form a now commonplace green house,
