I watched the broadcast this afternoon with a couple of other brothers. So I saw the part that had been "very dear" to Brother Splane's heart, starting at the 17:20 mark of the broadcast. That's because he served as a Circuit Overseer here in my city of Montreal, Canada, in the 1970s. Many in the city here, including an elderly couple in my congregation, have fond memories of the times Brother Splane served here.

As soon as Brother Splane mentioned the name Laurier Saumur, I knew what he was referring to. Because I served in a French congregation in the 1980s and 90s I had already heard of the experience that is related in the video. The church spoken of is called The Mission of the Holy Spirit, and that church is still there not far from where I live! (The church had closed for some time after all those ones came into the truth, but later reopened.) Absolutely everyone in my former French congregation had a study in those days, although many of those have passed away since then. There is still one sister in that congregation today who was a member of that church, and I knew her when I was in French. As you can see from the video, many other former members of the church are still serving in congregations in Montreal and other parts of the province of Quebec, a few of whom I have met.

I met Laurier Saumur some 25 years ago, but he has since passed away. When he related his life story for the Watchtower magazine, he spoke about his experience with that church near the end of the article.

I love when Splane does the Broadcast. He's the best teacher on the body in my opinion. This program was epic. Helped me to remember that people are always watching your conduct, especially if they know you're a Witness.

I loved the "do the math" talk. Now I am going to write them and ask them to show me how they calculated the date of Joseph's death.

I agree. He’s nice to listen to as well. Has a very pleasant voice 🙂

The Hebrew word cushi or kushi is an affectionate term generally used in the Bible to refer to a dark-skinned person of African descent.

Thank you, Br. Eric, for this. I found this story really encouraging. They must have been very sincere and humble people. In the broadcast, it is said that today about 200 former members of that church and their children are alive. Do you know how many of the 1000 or so originally accepted the truth?

The 3rd last paragraph of https://wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/1976845 explains:
In a space of two months I placed 1,300 Bible study aids among them. Many of the studies ceased later, but close to a hundred of this former church group have been immersed as Jehovah’s Witnesses, and four hundred others are either studying or attending meetings at the Kingdom Halls. More are expected to be immersed shortly.

Thanks for this article. Bro Eric.

According to William's transcript, it was displayed on the broadcast:

Quote

“Over 200 former church members and their descendants have come into the truth.”

I understand that to mean it was over 200 who were baptized either in the 1970s or later. However, since I was not in Quebec at that time, I don't have any first-hand information on it. I am only going on what I've heard from others in the congregation I was in during the late 1980s and early 90s, and what was written in the article.

Just a note: This video experience will be released as a stand-alone video later this month. It will be entitled: How Hundreds Found Bible Truth.

It was possible to download the stand-alone video for a few hours.

I think they will be back on September 16.

Andrey Nesmachniy: Soccer Was My Reason for Living

That's how I knew the title of the video. I downloaded both those videos while they were available.

I think someone at headquarters made a mistake and uploaded them before they were supposed to. :o

This brother, Andrey, is a star in his home country and a well-known figure among football lovers in some former Soviet countries. It was a shock to many when he quit his football career to become a JW. It is interesting that during championships, he would not sing the Ukrainian anthem and put his hand on heart. When asked about it, he said that "our religion does not allow us to make an idol of someone or something... All glory goes to our God, i.e. Jehovah". :)

As a sports/stadium aficionado, I found the piece about the former football (soccer) player, Br. Andriy,

very interesting. I loved how they got to use the actual stadium in Kyiv for this purpose. This stadium was totally re-vamped for the European Championships co-hosted by Ukraine and Poland in 2012. Surprisingly even our literature had an article about this tournament! https://wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/102012213?q=european+championships&p=par

The stadium has undergone a remarkable changed from an old Soviet concrete block as have many Eastern European stadiums since the early 2000s; old pictures found for instance at: https://www.stadiumguide.com/olimpiyskiy/

They had re-visited the illustration about a disposable cup that was very powerful, especially when an actual cup was crushed. Same thought is found in the Young People Ask: What Should I Do With My Life video where former (‘Merican) football player Levi mentions how sportsmen are disposable goods.

I found it interesting how they openly showed video of him playing as well as supporters with their flags. Usually our literature/video material covers over any brand names and alike. Also looked like Br. Andriy got to play in the premier European club tournament, The UEFA Champions League, as one of the video clips showed an advertisement hoarding the with the tournament logo and a sponsor logo (Amstel 🍺).

There is an interesting book about a historical Dinamo Kyiv episode during the WWII. I read it many years back. It’s called Dynamo: Defending the Honour of Kiev.

If I had more time, I would look up which seasons Dinamo made it to the UCL while Br. Andriy was playing.

Edit: Although if I remember correctly, the advertisement hoardings and the infamous tournament theme music are played even during the Qualifying Rounds of the tournament (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Champions_League_Anthem)

I think it's so cute how they try to visually portray Andrij Nesmatchnyj's immoral lifestyle ... well... without actually portraying an immoral lifestyle so as to prevent too much shock and possibly some triggers with brothers that struggled with giving up alcohol, drugs and pornography.

The party they are having in the nightclub is pretty much the type of party I've experienced with young Witnesses. Nothing like what dudes and gals at worldly discos and clubs are really like.

But how do you show a debased lifestyle without showing too much debauchery. A conundrum they deal with quite well.

Its obvious that Bro Splane enjoyed his time in Montreal. He made mention a couple times in a talk at the international in St. louis about being in the preaching work in the territory up there. It was neat to hear his experience.

Dutch is up!!

David Splane is the host and Br. Herman van Selm is co-host. (He's Dutch)

I was serving at Bethel Brazil when Brother Van Selm arrived in this country under his new assignment, Bethel. At the time he moved from Suriname to Brazil and I heard his first report the day after it arrived. He said it was as if he was going from the 19th century to the 21st century. And he never tired of pressing the toilet flush and showering, and apologized if the water bill in Brazil Bethel came more expensive that month. Over time he learned Portuguese very well and proved to be a very loving, humble and approachable brother. We love brother Van Selm.
