It’s a delicate situation for the church in Russia, fraught with rising tension. During Putin’s reign, missionaries there have been forbidden from religious proselytizing; they have to be called “volunteers” instead of missionaries and are limited to service opportunities. And even with that proviso, two missionaries-cum-volunteers were arrested in 2019 and detained for three weeks in an immigration facility because they were allegedly teaching English without a license.

But here’s what I can’t stop thinking about. Latter-day Saints, to our eternal shame, had a more amicable relationship with the Nazis in the 1930s before war broke out. As the book “Moroni and the Swastika” reveals, the church was very concerned at that time about not being expelled from Germany when its mission programs were gaining steam, so members did what they could to accommodate Hitler’s policies. For example, members utilized their genealogical expertise to help Germans prove their Aryan ancestry and even encouraged Latter-day Saint missionaries to teach German young men how to play basketball in advance of the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Hitler was hoping, the Deseret News indicated, for a “Nordic win” at the Games, and the missionaries could help with that.

They claim they are keeping a bit of distance from Russia's borders. They also claim this was planned long ago.

I saw a news report about this. This is a yearly gathering of international NATO troops for a period of I believe 3 months training. They claim it's supposedly for training in cold environments. Just so happens to be conveniently near the war...

The talk being preported is after the weekend, Putin's forces will attack a NATO territorial land. If it's true, NATO will have grounds to use force and that will tip everything over.

This is true. In the announcement we received it was mentioned that accommodation was needed for our Ukrainian and Russian friends who come as refugees. So they are coming from both countries.

I saw a report that many Russians are fleeing to Norway just to "get out". They didn't want to show their faces on camera, but have no more faith in staying in their "motherland."  Maybe they fear being arrested, or have lost their jobs, or see no future in Russia, etc.

If Putin has lost so many men in Ukraine that he is trying to recruit replacements from other countries, why would he want to do this?

He is bloodthirsty and wants to win no matter what. His father is the devil. He's committed war crimes in which the groundwork and preparation and evidence is already being prepared in the Hague against him. Sadly that doesn't stop him from not only trying to defeat Ukraine, but ruin his own country. According to some reports, his time is definitely up. That man will be held accountable to the justices of the court because of the millions of lives he has destroyed, including his ruthless attack on God's people.

One last thought - there were also Russians living in Ukraine in general, so I am not surprised by some of the Russian refugees. Some Russians have been married to Ukrainian partners for decades, raised children, or were there for work reasons.

So my daughter counted 3 Ukrainian cars parked on the streets of our neighbourhood. Our Ukrainian or Russian(?) neighbour has the Ukrainian flag hanging out of their window, and has taken in 3 families from Ukraine. But the owner of the house with the flag was telling my husband that their Russian relatives are not speaking with them right now. There is sadly too much false information being propagated within Russia that relatives are not speaking with each other. Amazing how fake news can channel all sorts of misunderstandings. The fact of the matter is, people are fleeing for their lives. It's sad when some try to minimize this. Right now many neighbourhoods like our's is emerging all over Europe.

NPR had a whole piece on this today. How a son from Ukraine was trying to tell his father his city was bombed and the father in Russia can not believe him. I thought it was nice that the son, instead of writing his father off, says it’s not his fault.  He will repeat as many times as he needs to. He blames the misinformation from government run media.

Surely Russian citizens must be aware of what happened in Grozny about 20 years ago___ Russian army reduced it to rubble. It’s no secret,,,So this is not out of character at all what is happening now.

 

End of the day, people believe what they want to believe. Same kind of defective thinking that moves people to vote for years and years, only to be repeatedly disappointed…but back to vote they go expecting things to improve. 🤦‍♀️
